Awkward moment

Does anyone else cringe when Uma starts dancing in the bar? Its towards the end and shes drinking screwdrivers. Then she goes to talk to Rick and its all a drunken mess. Its painful to watch cause you want to stop her.

I cringe too! There's a few moments in this movie that are just difficult to watch because you want to stop the poor girl

And what about the moment when Debby (Uma Thurman) and Rick are lying in the bed after a night stand and they start talking about trivial things, like the repairings he is going to do in the house

reply

Oh my...there are so many awkward moments in this movie - too many to name! When uma says "I just want to make you filet mignon". Ack..weird. And when Uma is wearing the leopard print top @ the bar & says to Rick "yes, I'm exactly like that!"....the way she shrugs and moves her upper body reminds me of Steve Martin & Dan Aykroyd saying "we're two wild and crazy guys"!!!

reply

It's scary, but it's definitely a tribute to Uma doing her homework! She reminds me of the "beer whores" I used to see in the bars in the 80's... very scary! She almost looks as though she is not only desperate, but also on drugs...

It was painful to watch that scene and well, the entire movie, because it looks like a biopic of my sister's life.

El Paso, Texas...ever heard of it?

So many moments were cringeworthy! Esp. that one where she's dancing in the bar. Ugh. But she was hard to feel sorry for, since she was so mean to her friend.

Sedagive?!!!

All a tribute to Uma Thurman's talent --
for someone so gorgeous and intelligent to turn herself into someone so pathetic and obnoxious that you cringe for her

Yes, what an awesome performance. How could someone so beautiful make herself look so ugly? She should've been nominated for an Oscar.

reply

Oh yeah. I don't think I've watched the entire dance she does because that scene just makes me cover my eyes. I know that sounds ridiculous but I just can't sit through that dance. I know it's a movie but I feel so embarrassed and can't stop cringing...

reply

Yes, it was sad. And what about when they were in Ollies and the guys were playing pool and she dances around to try and get Rick's attention and he's ignoring her, she goes to the jukebox and then she sits down on the sofa right next to where the guys are playing pool and no one acknowledges her.

And when she tells Beth, "this is different Beth, I didn't just go out and f some guy we SLEPT together".....keeping in mind she had to practically beg him to get into bed w/her. Or when she tells the girls at work "he came right up to me and starts talking" when she in essence threw herself at him.

Yeah, she was blind in more than one sense of the word :(

Desperation is what this smells of. A damaged woman just desperate for some attention. But engaging in nothing but negative attention.

She's just this damaged, lonely and broken person wanting something more than what she gets. But I don't think it ever occurs to her that booty calls will not lead to relationships. If some strange guy you just meet wants to sleep with you, either you recognize it for it is. A booty call

Or you walk away and hold your head high. I have a tough time trying to convince a lot of young ladies over the years of actually getting to know the guy first before sleeping with him and they just get so hostile to me.

And yet, these guys sleep with them and then take off. And the ladies always seem shocked and hurt.

From what I heard, Thurman saw this in its stage version and grabbed the rights to produce it. Check it, she has an executive producer's credit on this.

It's a testimony to her greatness. Anybody can stand there and look gorgeous, Thurman chose to take on this difficult, ugly role, and IMO she did a great job of making us care enough about this woman to cringe for her instead of just laughing at her. We want her to want better for herself-- and I think that's the point.

Exactly, Uma deserved more recognition for this role. At times, I thought no way would anyone who looks like Uma have to go to such desperate ends to get a guy's attention. But Uma completely played the part and was so believable. I kept thinking of her character in "Beautiful Girls", the polar opposite of Debbie in this film.

Attention, maybe, but sustained attention?

Pretty is as pretty does. Her neediness came off her in waves; that's like the opposite of beer goggles. I think that was part of the character's learning curve-- sexy posturing and doing/ liking/ saying all the right things does not get you love, and the kind of love you get from that is directed at some paper doll you have set up-- not you.
