AR-15 Segment Full of Lies and Misinformation

The recent segment on Real Sports regarding the AR-15/M-16 was full of bias, some lies and a lot of misinformation. It was also sloppy reporting.

1) The segment suggested that Leroy James Sullivan (Jim Sullivan) was the lead designer of the AR-15/M-16. This is misleading to say the least as Eugene Stoner was the lead designer. Mr. Stoner is dead now, so obviously he could not appear on the show, but there was no mention of him and instead the producers made it seem as if Sullivan took the lead.

2) There is talk early on that the gun was invented/developed to be an answer to the AK-47. That's actually pretty simplistic in reporting, but worse a single black and white photo is show of what appears to be East German police with assault rifles. The big problem is that they're holding StG44/MP-44 rifles, which were developed at the end of WWII. Those are NOT AK-47s at all! I mean how do you trust a program that can't get an image of the most common gun in the world?

3) Numerous times it is stated that the AR-15/M-16 or variants are used by most military forces around the world. No, that's totally wrong. The AK-47 variants are far more common. China and Russia don't use the M-16, nor does Pakistan, Iraq, Egypt or even NATO powers like Germany, the UK, France or Italy. In fact, apart from the United States, Mexico, Japan and Taiwan most armies don't rely on the M-16.

4) Numbers were thrown around, but no one bothered to note that there are 10 times the number of AK-47s in the world today.

5) The damage done by an M-16 is mentioned, but what wasn't noted was that in the 18th and 19th centuries more people died from minor gun wounds. A gun shot to the arm could kill you in the 19th century, so the point about the gun being deadlier is a lie/myth.

6) The segment noted real use with the guns in sport shooting, but still couldn't end on an up note - with Bryan Gumble asking, "what can be done about it."

Total typical BG bias against guns.

reply

yep, total garbage. his opening monologue on it was ridiculous.
less than 2% of all gun crime is committed with rifles let alone ar15s
it's the illegal inner city handgun that's killing so many americans yet it's not popular to bring that up.

reply

gumble advocates the use of slingshots.

So...you're upset the show didn't tailor their investigation to your liking.
