A Little Muddled

Hi there.

I bought a DVD copy from A&E back in 2002 right after it aired. First off, the closed captioning was absent even though the jewelbox notated that the feature was closed-captioned. Second, between Lukas Haas and Lisa Bonet's sof-spokenn voices, it was quite difficult to discern the dialogue. Thus, the need to acctivate the captioning which, ironically, weren't available on the DVD.

At first, I'm thinking that since the copy I got from A&E was a first-pressing batch, that may account for the sound quality and captioning goofs.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Same here! I tried to turn on captioning because I couldn't hear some of the dialog. Captioning was not available--either using the DVD button or the TV button.

My copy also has the CC symbol on the back.

I'm sorry you didn't understand. I absolutely love this movie. For me, no matter what movie I watch, I'll automatically enable closed caption options. I enjoy movies of all kinds but, when I turn the captioning, I can make certain that I understand and hear every word. For example, I always have closed captioning turned on when I watch "Will & Grace." Namely because Karen's voice is so high and she speaks quite quickly. Thus, with the captioning turned on, I can fully enjoy "Will & Grace," no matter if Karen's speaking or someone else.

I am sorry that you feel I was looking for flaws.

I am not deaf but with closed captions you tend to know more about what is being said, especially off camera where so much dialogue disappears. Not everyone has perfect hearing, by the way.

I have noticed so many movies now have terrible audio and sound quality. With all the whispering and low talking, and accents, etc you miss half the movie dialogue. TElevision is just as bad.

The audio technology of the 21st century is just not matching the visual technology, so i put on captioning or subtitles when possible.

As for Lathe of Heaven, I did watch it in 2002 and I can remember being unhappy with the sound. You might as well not understand English if you can't freakin hear what they are saying!!

I will not bother to rent this since it may not be subtitled. I am reading the book tho and it is great.

And to say that because someone wants captioning that they are looking for flaws is the stupidest comment I have ever seen on this board.

Seriously, get your head in the game, or get outa the way.
