What happened to the demons in modern times?

If they live forever, why don´t we see them in present day?

We're supposed to accept they all died within 500 years due to...something? I was hoping the series would end with the jewel being destroyed or used in a way that would somehow wipe out most of the demons and explain what happened.

I'd love to see you in the moonlight with your head thrown back and your body on fire.

So that means that Seshomaru and all those other demons are idiots because not once did they ask Kagome what the future was like. Especially Inuyasha who time traveled with Kagome and noticed that all the demons were gone.

Oh... I know!!!

They became frozen at high altitudes! But the day will come when they thaw out once again!

There's a slogan written here. 'Happiness Will Walk Away'...

I'm sure some of them are still around in Kagome's world, but perhaps the war against Naraku wiped out most of them and the disappearance of the jewel made the rest much less active, left them with no reason to be so active and gather in such large numbers anymore. Just my theory.

I think they are still in existence and not that less in numbers, though I suppose quite a few would have interbred with humans.
But since they generally have an "I don't care" attitude towards humans, I would find it quite plausible for them to just hide among humans and ignore them for most of the time.

I agree. I remembered a while after I made that post, that there was actually a demon event that happened in Kagome's world. The one with the flesh-eating Noh mask. That one wasn't something that Kagome brought from the Sengoku period; it was one that was already there. So that's one example showing that the demons are still around at least to some extent.

If I remember correctly, that mask was after a Shake On Jewel shard which was caused by Kagome in the Feudal Era. When I first watched the series I wondered if the present day would have been impacted. I was delighted to see that episode because it makes sense that if the jewel shattered in the past, it would have changed the present (future?) drastically until they corrected the problem. Even though the mask was already there in the present day, I don't think that is the best example.

There was a second episode which appears to be in the present day. It was completely separate from the regular demons and I don't think it was even after a jewel shard?? It was that giant yellow floating Grim Reaper demon. I don't know if it traveled through the Bone-Eating Well but I still think it was a demon who exists in the modern world.

I'm sure as human technology grew they were able to eradicate a lot of the demons.

They are still around. I have always believed they are still around. I even pretend that InuYasha lived to the present and somehow cast a spell to get the humans such as Kagome to be able to live as long as the demons. (otherwise InuYasha would easily outlive her.)

And if they are still around, they have disguised themselves. InuYasha would have worn different clothes and probably cut, or maybe even dyed his hair.

But for the demons that don't look like humans probably hide from society instead of blending in. Jinenji, Shippo, Hachiemon, and Jaken wouldn't be able to disguise themselves so easily.

Demons such as Sesshomaru would have to stop using their endless powers.

I'm not sure that demons live forever, although the powerful ones can definitely live hundreds of years. Older demons like Myoga and Totosai complain about their ailments, giving the impression that they are going to die eventually.

Over time some of the demons were killed, some were permanently sealed and hidden like the Noh mask. Demon lords like Sesshomaru are able to travel to other dimensions like the one his mother lives in (or Hell itself for that matter). I think that as humans became dominant in the modern world that the demon lords would have moved out of our world to rule in worlds in other dimensions and taken their vassals with them.
