pet peeve

My pet peeve when it comes to people with differing opinions on the same movie is when someone says, "You just have bad taste in movies." I have seen a few people say that on these threads. Even worse are people who try and make you feel unintelligent for simply not liking a movie. How about saying someone has a DIFFERENT taste in movie than you? I mean, one of the great things about movies is the ability to interpret them in different ways and get others opinions on them. I, for one, hated this movie. I almost turned it off but decided to comit to the whole 101 minutes when all I wanted to do was go to bed. I knew if I came here to vent my displeasure with the film that some would say, "Oh, you just don't know good film." To me, it sounds an aweful lot like some people just put certain dirctors on pedestals and assume they can do no wrong. Well, news flash, it is possible for great directors to make crap sometimes. This film, in my frank opinion, absolutely sucked. There were no redeeming qualities. So, have at me, tell me I am an ignorant, casual movie fan, that I don't "understand" the meaning of the film, but please don't tell me I have bad taste in movies. That just implies that you think you are superior and your taste is the only good or right one, and no one likes a cocky movie critic. ;-)

You're good nova. I agree with you 100%. That's why I never ask anybody about their opinion before I go watch a movie, because it doesn't matter. If somebody loves or hates a movie, it doesn't mean that i'm gonna love or hate it. For example, I hated this movie, and I liked Gigli (not loved it), but liked it. There's no way in hell I can sit through this movie again, where Gigli I can watch it again if i had to. Peace.

well just goes to show, i thought this was a fantastic film, i was totally hooked from about 10 seconds in. It's atmospheric, beautifully lit, brilliantly acted, thoughtful and genuinely touching.
I can't comment on your taste as i don't know what other films you hate, but i do believe that some people's opinions are more considered than others, and there is such a thing as objective good taste.
mind you i hated Barton fink the first time I saw it, then loved it the second time, I think where some films are concerned you have to take it slow, be in the right mood and educate your palate... if you want to.
