So the impression I get from this film is that everything was orchestrated by the German Military, and Adolf was a puppet or a spokesperson for an already established ideology.

I wouldn't be surprised that the military personnel in the emerging party killed Max on purpose, sending the sailors to do it, so Hitler wouldn't get distracted by art and start concentrate on what the army wants him to do.. rally the masses to the right against the communists!

The most important line was when the officer told him: The country is on a fork in the road, right or left. and the answer was: what the military will choose will be.

Freikorps. Not German military.

Fun little fact: many of the Freikorps were used for the Beer Hall Putsch during Uncle Hitler's proto-revolution back in 1923.
