Diablo not dead?

I just reviewed the original trailer for Diablo II on Youtube, in which you see the dark wanderer sitting on the back of a wagon. At the end he drops a red gem(soulstone!) into the mud and simply rides on. I knew I remembered something of the sort, and when it was confirmed me and some friend started theorizing.
What if the soulstone you destroy in the game is not the real one? What if Diablo had somehow foreseen, or anticipated, his defeat and then disposed of the REAL soulstone and somehow constructed/got hold of/whatever a fake?
This would create the opportunity for him being in Diablo 3, along with Azmodan and Belial.

Any thoughts would be most welcome!

The soulstone you destroy in the game is Mephisto's, so there might be a Diablo 3, though currently there aren't any official plans for it. Deckard Cain might address Diablo's lack of a soulstone, I don't really pay attention to him when he talks now that I've been through around 50 times. Anyways, Blizzard has said they when all the World of Warcraft buzz dies down. So Diablo 3 is a possibility but not for a few years.

Actually I was referring to the cutscene where you see both Mephisto's and Diablo's soulstones smashed, but I suppose I could have been more specific. You also see Diablo's soul being sucked into a soulstone(?)when you kill him, so either he really is gone, og he has some trick up his sleeve.

there WILL be a diablo3 the problem is when. blizzard have already announced they are going 2 make starcraft 2 and diablo 3 at some point. i say diablo3 will most likley be announced officially this year and will beout either next year or 2009. that is a good point. it is a possible lead. can you give me the link to it?

yea they started SC2 in 2003 so who knows wen they started/will start D3. i was mostly surprised about how well they kept it a secret i mean one day its juss there on theyre site!

and..its Diablo.... he will never be fully killed and will always b able to come back somehow but hopefully the rest of the Lesser Evils have major roles in D3. im really interested in wut the story will be and the new lands. maybe the Evils push the war onto heaven grounds? who knows, culd b koo

if uve been keeping up for the past.....2 years they have been hinting at d3 so much it makes me wanna punch babies for u having ne doubt whatsoever. most likley will b announced blizzcon 07 or 08

i am just praying REALLY hard that diablo3 will come out. even d2 itself..not many people are playing it anymore...all attention are on wc, dota or wow!!!!

diablo is a great game..the best ever!!! hope they start on d3 SOON. damn!

Baal is the only one who's soulstone was not destroyed. Tyrael could have picked it up and it could have consumed him and made him evil. Being possessed maybe Tyrael resurects the 3 Prime Evils. That could be the story for D3. Of course, this was thought up by a friend and I.

I do think it will happen. There is so much demand for it. I'm just tired of wishing it would be soon. I hope I am wrong and that it is very soon!

you said it would be out in 2009. we're lucky if it's out by 2012
