auster, a pedofile, seriously

i actually think that auster was clearly more of the pedofile type. the way that he just looked at her throughout the whole movie, you can see it in his eyes, if you ask me. i mean come on! how old was she supposed to be in this movie? 15 or 16? and what about his wife, i think that he still loves her and has no intentions of leaving her, so, to me, he seems the more pedofile type, please give me your opinions, this is mine, i actually like the movie, i thought that it was very interesting

I agree... I started watching this movie right before the...umm... part at the beach and didn't know the rest of the story, so I just thought "eww, pedophile." And you're right, it is a great movie, but he deinitely has the pedophile thing going on. (By the way, I went back later and watched the rest of the movie in case anyone was planning on saying anything :) )

Strictly speaking, "pedophile" is a term applied to a person who is sexually attracted to prepubescent children.

She was 18 not 16

reply

she was in 12th grade which could make her 18 (or even 19 --- if she has a weird Nov b-day).

The teacher still abused her trust.

Mr. Auster's wife seemed to sense what what going on, as if it had happened before. But yeah, the girla was probably a senior (probably turned 18 by spring break)although not explicitly stated in the movie, and she had a driver's license and was planning on going to community college.

But any teacher is certainly violating the law when he/she tries to seduce a student even if the student is 19!

reply

Could easily be 17. And yeah, probably at least a violation of his employment agreement if a current student.

While I agree that what he did sexually with her was wrong, I don't think he intended for that to happen from the beginning. I do believe that he cared for Meg, but started allowing tempting thoughts to come as he worked with her more and more. It probably started after she showed physical affection for him the first time after class. I don't see him as a pedofile type, but he did lie to her, and was inappropriate towards her in a scene that is very uncomfortable and difficult to watch. Agnes Bruckner did an excellent job as the confused and troubled Meg. Good movie!

he totally meant for that to happen from the beginning. He had that little house all ready, and he seems to have done this on an annual basis with girls who are troubled and in need of a father figure.

i agree he planned it from the start -- creepy movie

I agree that Austor did prey on nieve girls but to call him a pedophile is going a bit far. Meg was a high school senior and looking for colleges, strictly speaking he did nothing illegal even in the IMDB synopsis Meg is described as being 18. I'm not defending the actions Auster took, but simply trying to put them into perspective. What he did was unethical and immoral but no better or worse than any middle age man who goes after young women who is seen as a figure of authority. He definitely abused his power and betrayed Meg's trust. But pedophile come on.....If Austor was a pedophile i guess Hugh Hefner would have to be considered a pedophile as well for having 18 year old girls nude in Playboy along with everyone else in the adult entertainment industry.
Auster made poor choices and abused his power and trust, which is inexcusable but please use proper terminology to define him instead of making him into something he was not. Many College professors make the same mistake, grant you they usually don't go to the lengths that Auster did, but that does not make them pedophiles.

I watched "The Reader" recently, a story of a older woman and a teenage boy having an affair. In that movie, the boy is only about 16, and the encounter affects him for the rest of his life. Basically the woman raped him, as he was a child, but I've seen no mention of rape in any discussions of the movie I've seen. In the media, women "have sex" with boys, and yet if an older man has sex with an 18 year old (adult) woman, it's seen as perverted and disgusting.

Becoming sexually attracted to a girl of that age does not make one a paedophile.

reply

I'm 23 and My girlfdriend is 17.

Am I a pedophile then?

A pedophyle is a person who is atracted to very young girls/boys. If he o she is atracted only to one "old" teenage, that doesnt make him a pedohile.

I don't think he's a pedophile at all. I think he's an emotionally isolated man who finds an intellectual/emotional connection in his talented student, which then, perhaps inevitably, evolves into a sexual attraction. I think his initial attraction to her was on a more cerebral level.

Yea, and he should have been reported to the high school principle and the police!
