Del is an intelligent girl with a pretty face, but She thinks more in molecules and bacteries than love and kisses, and all the men look her body instead her mind or feelings, so She hates the men.
At the end, Jimmy accidentally says She is "ugly", nobody say that before and She was angrier and confused.
To me, Del is a lonely sarcastic girl hidden in her work with a bad love experiences.
That was a very deep assessment of her character. That pretty much sums it up
