The money at the end makes no sense

Gale’s ex-wife was the daughter of an ambassador, the son was never at risk from being poor or needing money. They were living with her new husband in a very upscale flat in Barcelona.

And how would he trust his wife not to spend it on herself anyway?

Was it really just the “fuck you” with the post card from Berlin that mattered?

Or were we supposed to believe that Gale was still in love with his wife and this was some kind of I’m sorry devotional gift?

David throughout was a devoted father. Sure he missed his wife, probably still loved her even, but his son was ultimately the only thing that mattered to him. His wife stripped that away with no chance of ever reconciling that. The world thought he was a rapist, his life was already ruined even before the "murder."

It was the only thing he thought he could do... Keep in mind he was a staunch anti-death penalty advocate who got that taken from him as well, so with his last act of control he set himself up, used the money to give to his son (hoping I'm sure his wife would give it to him, or at least use it for him) AND highlight the injustices of the death penalty.

Now, I will admit the plot was a bit sticky, as his son was taken from him but he might've had a chance at reconciliation after he turned 18, or perhaps could've fought for Berlin to admit the truth, but alas the movie needed to progress.

Also, he did cheat on his wife with Berlin. Even though she accused him of rape which he was not guilty of. He still betrayed the mother of his child. So maybe it was part guilt money in addition to money for his son.

His wife was already cheating on him first.
