'no, i'm sorry, but no' ??

I had no idea why Albert said "No, I'm sorry, but no" and then showed up 3 months later. Why did he say no? Any ideas?

[Any ideas?]

Carolina's white trash family was too much for him, and he had to get away to regroup? Not fair, but that's how I saw it.

Interesting interpretation...but I don't agree. I think he was very comfortable with her family. But, he'd had his heart broken by her already, and he wasn't about to let her do it again. And then 3 months later, he figured out that he really did love her and needed her in his life. I think it was also a slight shock for him that she all of a sudden came out and told him that he was who she wanted.

If anyone has any ideas they should forward them to the screenwriter since they're obviously out of them.

I just had the unfortunate experience of watching some of this movie on WE. What a waste of my time (and talent..Julia Stiles must be embarrased to have this one on her resume).

This movie was great. It was a light-hearted romance movie and sometimes that is all that we need.

Personally, I think Albert was just trying to protect himself. He was obviously in love with her and hurting throughout the entire movie.

Or....maybe he thought that he was her second choice since it didn't work out with Heath.

In any case, I laughed my a$$ off at Shirley McLain's character. True Shirley style!!

The reason he said no, was because in his eyes she had turned him down, and he wasn't going to let her back in that easy. She has to work to gain his affections. If someone turns me down, then comes back months later and says I want to be with you, nope too late. And in reference to "ynghrt23"'s comment, you are incorrect, Julia Stiles is and was very gung ho about making this movie and in fact after the film shut down the first time, and everyone walked, she stayed on and pushed her school semister up a semister so she could film this movie. The only anger she has about the making of this movie was that Miramax Films which bought the distribution rights to the film didn't do anything with it. They never released it. Watching a movie midway through on cable doesn't constitute seeing a movie.

You nailed it. Once you feel rejected, why then put yourself in a position to be hurt again? This is a rom/com however so of course she's eventually going to end up with the guy. I agree with you however and have done it myself under somewhat similar circumstances. Life's too short to waste your time pining over someone who either can't or refuses to see you for who you are when there's a whole lot of great women out there.

At first I thought he was saying no because maybe things had gotten more serious between him and the girl he was dating. But that he still, of course, had feelings for her. But yeah, she'd said no before... I definately don't think it had anything to do with her family, though. He'd always seemed to like them.

Who ever thought it was the family, was thinking of Heath not Albert. I just thought we needed another stall so we could have the big moment at Thanksgiving. What a trite, sloppy, disconnected, obvious movie. The writing is as stilted and pointless as the performances. Sorry, I love good romantic comedies and this ain't it. It received the performances that the writing and direction deserved. It continually announced it's quirkiness without ever being quirky. The entire movie looked like sets, not places anyone, especially these characters, inhabited. Why would Albert care for Carolina at all? Why would anybody? I'm nuts about Julia Stiles, but not here. She's stupid and clueless throughout, there's nothing charming or lovable about her. The only character I felt anything for was poor old dad (Randy Quaid). With that group, no wonder he sought solace with the guys at AA. Oh, and Ernie. Again, he seemed to have some inner life that wasn't just some plot points strung together to shape a "character".

I agree with your take on the movie. The writing and directing (and even the editing) was slightly bizarre. Some scenes were winners and others were just, well... bizarre. Poor judgement (i.e. children using profanity to start the movie off is always a bad sign - just distasteful, not funny) is the best excuse for this kind of film making. That said, the movie was not completely without charm. Shirley Mac Laine and Julia Stiles were actually the best part in my opinion. Why they would agree to do this movie is another question. And for all the disappointment, at least the movie ended well. Also, the scene with Julia at the tow yard actually brought tears to my eyes (or maybe it was just PMS). Overall, couldn't recommend it.

this is stupid but when is this in the film - is it just b4 the 3 months later bit -- cos i think it makes the film make more sense but the version i watched doesn't appear to have it

I actually really liked this movie, not to judge those who commented negatively but I have to say a big pet peave of mine are those who go through and pick apart a movie. It was cute, it was funny, it didn't change your life and make you want to become a jockey or writer ah well. About the reason he said no....

I would think that in his eyes it was one that she said no, two that she could be on the rebound from that idiot Heath, and three that she could just be trying to cling onto him beacause of her grandmothers death and he would want it to be for him.

I'm probably wrong but that's what I thought.

The version I just saw was dubbed, but even then I'd have caught the 'saying-no'-bit, if it had been there. And I was also very surprised when Albert showed up at the end and suddenly Carolina wanted him anyway.

So somebody must have cut out a scene somewhere and cathw987 and I saw this version.

The end would have made way more sense with a scene where she tried to get Albert anyway and he reacted by saying no.

And I thought I was completely stupid for not finding this scene on my DVD. Now I'm relieved.

It was missing in my streamed version, too!
People talking about this scene... I was so confused!

The real world reason is that the screenwriter or director wanted to have the "surprise" ending where he shows up and sweeps her off her feet just when we were supposed to think all hope was lost.

In the world of the movie there was absolutely no rhyme or reason for that character to say that. It was completely inconsistent with his character.

I'll add that he said "no" because Carolina just assumed he'd be thrilled she finally deigned to have feelings for him and i never occurred to her he might reject her. She'd taken his love for granted and, yes, his heart was broken.
Also, ironically, their conversation took place at the exact same table where she'd previously turned down the (somewhat arrogant) Heath's offer.
But this time, the tables were turned. (sorry- I couldn't resist that one.)
