Why was there such a curse upon the the different time lines?

It seemed the worlds Evan ended up creating were always eerily ill-fated. There had to be a little more to it than just tough luck and coincidences. It seemed like there was a negative force, some type of curse through the time lines. Something was up.

I think it was like "don't screw with fate" like final destination style

I believe that's possible. I don't think Evan really ''got that though'' even towards the end. He seemed to believe the source of everything going terrible in the time lines was the result of himself coming into kayleigh's life as a boy. Which actually wasn't what was really going on. Evan's father Jason did realize what was going on and that it was a curse which is why he attempted to strangle Evan.

He had white knight syndrom. He had to save her, even though that's not what's best.

I always took it as the kind of 'cursed monkey paw' type horror, where you can wish anything you want, but every wish would always come with awful consequences. So this guy can time travel all he wants, but anything he changes will come with unseen horrible consequences.

In the original version I saw, the ending is 'bittersweet, but happy', where he was able to confine the 'bad results' down to 'the romance between them never happens' and 'the two of them never know each other'.

I guess that was the least awful consequence he could muster with all that time traveling and changing the past. So he left well-enough alone. Better to break your heart than lose your arms, be imprisoned or locked up in a mental institution, or have her become a h00ker.

I always go back to Back to the Future when Doc told Marty that no one should know too much about their outcome/future/destiny. Evan simply knew too much and he just had to fix it, but every time he did, there was always still something that went wrong.

I think the men in Evans family had a curse towards their true loves. His father tried to choke him out likely to protect his wife (''just by being here you could be killing your mother''). I think he remained in that institution until his death due to the fact that it may have been the only timeline where his wife and son were okay. Not an ideal situation, but he tried to stop the curse the only way he knew how. Evan stopped the curse by going back in time to ensure he never had involvement with Kayleigh at all.
