What is a car coat?

In the scene where Owen asks Ann if she wants to go for a ride, she at first thinks he means in his car & says she'll go get her car coat. What is a car coat?

Car coats are outwear which were originally designed for driving in open cars, which could get cold in the evening or at high rates of speed. A car coat often also has a stylish flair, so that a dashing motorist could step out of a vehicle looking fashionable. Many companies make car coats to wear in various contexts, not just cars; a car coat can be a stylish and useful addition to a wardrobe. Department stores usually carry an array of car coats, especially in the fall and winter.

longer than a jacket and dressier, but shorter than a full-length or top coat

JdWreck is correct on the length but my wife (reading over my shoulder) adds that women of that lady's age would likely have had a Mink Car Coat. My wife inherited a very high quality faux-mink car coat and a mink one from her grandmother and aunt. Her aunt preferred the faux-mink which was made in the 1960s because it was easier to clean and didn't carry the risk of the pelts being attacked by bugs that eat the skins, making the fur fall out.

Weird detail but it speaks to how seriously upper middle class women took their car coats back when dressing up just to go for a ride in the car was a big deal. Her Faux-mink is so realistic that PETA-type folks heckle her when she wears it until she shows them the label. They still get upset, though, cuz it was made by a top furrier in NYC.

These days, (according to my wife again) car coats tend to be made of luxury wools, have 3 quarter sleeves to make use of phones easier and length-wise are meant not to be sat-upon when you are seated in a car, making them a little shorter than the 50s thru 70s styles. if it's fur, it doesn't matter if you sit on part of it since Mink doesn't wrinkle.

My wife, the NYC fashionista has a lightweight wool car-coat with 3-quarter sleeves. Hers is what I would call beige but she says it is "camel". She has matching long gloves and "cloche" hat in the same wool.

She recently bought me a light wool "Top-Coat" since I embarrassed her by not having a full lenth black coat appropriate for funerals when I was asked to carry my grandmother's coffin. I had to borrow somebody's ugly letterman black jacket. She was NOT happy about that so she got me the proper attire. She gave it to me saying, "you will soon be a pallbearer at your parents or my parents funerals, so you need to look like a grown-up next time." Yikes! She's right but that was a downer gift.
