A Question On Ella At The End

Why was she there in court, Was it to get the lover back or was she there because she and Les had gotten back together and she was supporting him. Was this covered in the book. I cannot figure out why this case all of a sudden was of interest to her. Does anyone else feel she knew or at least suspected he had something to do with his former gals death because he was following it in the newspaper.

Also it seems as if quite a bit is missing from the film, such as we never see the break-up scene between Ella and the lover. Did he leave on his own or she asked him to leave. And how would she get Les to return since he knew he was impotent or at least had trouble making love to her. And had to know he was there just because she needed help with the barge.

I am not sure if the film you watched was missing some scenes but I'll try to answer them.

- When Joe confronts Les after he catches them in bed together, he says he'll leave instead of Joe. Transition to the next scene with Joe and Ella where we hear that Les will write her a letter.

- There's a scene where Joe returns back to the barge and Ella's sister says that Ella had gone to see Les.

- Whether Les forgave Ella or not it is never said, but my guess is she was in court there to support him. However, this story isn't about Ella and Les but Joe.

I have watched this film twice and never saw the scene where her sister tells Joe that Ella went to see Les. I thought she [sister]cleared out after they returned home from the cinema. I assume this scene is after after the sister has sex with Joe otherwise what would she be going to see him for since she had made up her mind she would be with Joe. I will assume you are correct because it would make no sense that he would have left her from her actions after he tries to touch her.

The film really did skip around much and was not well put together so it was a bit frustrating for him to jump around from house/women without explaining just a little bit how the break-ups happened. It also was never explained why the house lady he had in the end wanted him but would not touch her husband.
