american ratings with sex.

to me it seems that when theres sex and nudity in a film, the american rating system is really harsh on them. im australian and for example this movie only got an MA15+, which is all it deserves in my opinion, but in america its NC-17! i dont believe it deserves this rating at all, but thats me.

in australia i think we are more harsh on violence rather than sex and nudity, where america is strict on the sex and nudity, is this right?

Yep, americans think it's worse to see a pair of breasts than someone getting shot in the face.. for some reason that escapes me at the moment.

American hardly has a monopoly on being uptight.

no, not a monopoly, just a 90% share.

Someone being shot in the face isn't someone actually being killed. There's a difference betwen phony violence that doesn't hurt anyone and actual violence.

I wouldn't want to see a video of a real person actually dying- but an action movie is ok.

it's because teens often have unwise sex; they rarely kill someone. so glorification of which influences their behavior more, do you think?

American censors are not allowed to show a naked human body (not alive anyway), but very content with showing torture and violence. The censors are hard at work in America - but only on the most basic of all things human - Nudity.

I don't agree on a lot of the MPAA's ratings, especially with Hollywood movies which show a scene of d*ck in romance movies and making it NC-17. However, Hollywood will allow d*ck to be seen in a comedy as humor and pass it with a R rating, along with endless scenes of breasts, vag, and extremely crude jokes.

When I was watching this movie, I had to agree with the NC-17 rating. However, this is in the perspective of an American who has adapted his whole life to the MPAA's ratings. I would say I have seen over 1000 films in my lifetime, a little less than half of that is foreign. However, I was surprised by the detail of the sex it was in the film. The scenes were so raw and realistic, in my mind that is why I believe it was leaned into the NC-17 range. Also don't forget the theme of constant adultry and the crazy sex scene with C (the custard scene, the spanking, then sex), I believe that is the real reason it was finally pushed to a NC-17.

I'm replying a bit late to this (I see this post is from 2008), but I'm glad someone else notices.

Just take a look on the boards of "Nine Songs" or "Blue is the Warmest Color".

Threads over threads about the nudity and sex scenes and everything else substantial in those movies seem to become non-existent for so many americans that clearly feel very uncomfortable with this part of human nature. Sorry americans, I know aren't all the same, but just stating the very obvious. And I think it's a cultural thing, without judging someone for feeling that way.

I'm very open when it comes to this, but must say in Young Adam I felt like those rough sex scenes were a wee bit overly used. Not because they disturbed me, but after the third time those scenes lost on effect for me. It was TOO much of it and sometimes they appeared like plot fillers.
