i'm going to post pretty much the same comment on "the ring" (english version) board
why call this version "ring" when there was no rings in it - the english one had a ring which was the well, but this 1 and the other jap 1's....no rings?
The movie is based on the first part of a series of books. These books are called "Ring", "Spiral" and "Loop". Judging by that, the name refers to a vicious circle of some sort. You know, how the curse keeps going around and around unless someone snaps the ring.
Movies don't create psychos, movies make psychos more creative.

sharePretty much to follow the original names, but I can think of several different rings which occur throughout the series:
- Ring in the well (obvious one)
- Ring of the iris in Sadako/Samara/Eun-Suh's eye (and also the eye in 'Ringu 0' where Shizuko appeared by the sea)
- Ringing of the telephone after seeing the video
- (in particular, 'The Ring') drawing/seeing/dreaming about circles and rings (like doodles, coffee mug circles on a newspaper, sunlight (in 'Rings') etc etc)
- The fact that Sadako/Samara/Eun-Suh's terror is a never ending cycle. You watch the tape, copy it, show it to someone else. They do the same. It goes on and on and on.
- Possibly the circular shape of the horse's eye on the cursed tape (only Sadako's and Samara's I think)
- Maybe reading way too much into this now but the circles in the video cassette which the tape wraps around?
Well these are my ideas. Personally I think that 'Ring' was a very clever title and suits it very well - it gives the story an element of mystery because it could mean anything.

the auhtor of the book that its based on has stated that he saw the word "ring" in the dictionary, liked all the definitions, or something,but the real reason why he choose it was because of the depiction of the cycle that samaras curse has on people...they see it, the phone rings, they will die unless they copy it AND show it to someone else, continuing wiht whoever gets the tape next. Also, the names of the sequals have meaning like this to them, although im not sure what they are...the FAQ page (on the ring american version title) on this site doesnt say lol!
