Grandmother

I don't understand why (since he had married Kathryn a long time ago and had a teenaged daughter, etc.) that he lied and said his mother was dead. Does anyone have any insight into this? When the movie ended I was so disappointed that I didn't get to see the encounter between Maddie and her grandmother. Thanks for any info.
