He doesn't hear very well
Tim Daly's character is practicing behind the barn. But he doesn't hear the boy sneaking around or the woman coming? A gun fighter that can't hear any better than that wouldn't live very long.

You are right. Johnny Gault tells Rebecca, as a Shootist, he has eyes in the back of his head. But when they where making love he didn't sense (hear or see) Fannie Weaver in the kitchen until it was too late. I guess he gets caught up in the moment. :)
