The ending (SPOILERS)

Uggh, it just finished. All in all I liked it, but come on. I used to work trauma ER at the county hospital, and if you get shot in the chest to where it's lodged next to the pulmonary artery, let's just say in today's medical world you MIGHT survive. But back then on the prairie? You don't stand a chance. Even John Gault's shooting should have killed him but they were able to get the bullet out of his abdomen. How pray tell did they get the bullet out of her chest??? And for someone on the brink of death she sure made a quick recovery and her hair wasn't even messed up!!! I get the love story, but it's things like this that kind of ruin it. Why not just have her get shot in the arm?

It was enjoyable, but for the gunshot to the chest. Impossible.

I think there had to be a "miracle" of sorts so the giving up of the weapons would mean something to forward the plot. It's a bit corny but the rest of the film was so excellent. The acting, the scenery, the direction - this is one of my favorite movies to rewatch.

God is a lot more powerful then medicine, and he is the one who healed both Johnny and Rebecca from their gunshot wounds and their sad lives. Johnny was used as a child to work, and Noah wanted to marry Rebecca not because he was attracted to her or even for economic reasons but to have kids so they can be made to work. The reality is neither one was happy with their lives ( especially Johnny, because at least Rebecca had her son)), and because both were honest and were willing to sacrifice Johnny with Rebecca ( then giving up his guns), and Rebecca with the church( by telling the truth knowing she would be excommunicated), they ended up together. I think her son played a huge role in the movie: He saved Johnny from being killed by throwing the rock at the guy who was going to kill him, then in the scene in the river he brought the first bit of happiness to Johnny and Rebecca smiled when she saw how well they got along, and that allowed her to know that not only would her son be safe with Johnny, but underneath it all he was not that bad.
