He was set to go to prison, how does the wife fit into all this

It's a great film, The sub-titling may be poorly done, and the version I'm watching might be poorly edited, but I can't understand why he got married, and why is he traveling to see his deceased wife? Wasn't he already committed to going to prison as a fall guy?

Its been a while since I watched the movie, so I might be missing a lot of points. But what I think is

1) He got married coz of the money, she need to get resident permit so she marries him and he gets the money but they don't meet each other.

2) He is committed to go to prison but he wish to see his wife before he leave as I believe he reads one of the letter which she wrote to him.
