Remake

I heard a rumor today that the producer of many of the American remakes of Japanese and Korean films said that he is intending to remake Failan with Philip Seymour Hoffman. It's a sad, sad day in the world.

reply

True, but atleast it's with PSH. That's a good start atleast. I just hope they try to do something different, not just copy it, you couldn't better this film really. There's little if any room for impreovement.

I see nothing wrong with a writer/ director taking ideas from a movie and working with it in a different manner, or adding their spin' to it. It's all the remakes that piss me off.

"I don't want to achieve immortality through my work; I want to achieve it by not dying"

reply

Well, to add from what I said, it's supposedly going to follow Hoffman and then a Russian emigre to America. Just doesn't seem like it could really have the same impact here, since Failan is so ingrained with social criticism.

reply

"since Failan is so ingrained with social criticism."

And with the U.S. being the most critical country on the planet...

reply

I wouldn't advice a Russian immigrant to opposite Philip S. Hoffmann in this remake. Like you said there wouldn't be any impact or sympathy from the audience. Americans always root for the underdog in movies. So who's the underdog in American society right now? Surely it's not the Caucasians. How about casting a Latin actress, because it's ingrained in the American mind (thru our media), that Hispanics are the ones who's always being deported. People could readily relate to this. You rarely see a Russian in the 6'o clock news being deported by the I.N.S.

reply

Shepster, I know what you're saying, a great casting idea....but for *beep* sake!!! Please don't anybody remake this. It's a wonderful movie, if people can't be bothered with subtitles then they do not deserve to EVER see the greatest movie to come from South Korea.

oh man I could kill to see PSH do Choi Min-Sik's role, both of them are great

reply

I don't quite agree with that. Anyone who is interested can buy the film online. Plus, the American movie audience isn't going to care about the original - they hardly ever do when it comes to foreign remakes. The only movie that I can think of that had some success was Ringu. Look at what The Lake House did for Il Mare. Nothing.

Look at what The Lake House did for Il Mare. Nothing.

that's because they were both rubbish

reply

You guys are arrogant _ssholes. The U.S. shouldn't have to buy the rights to remake the film anyway because the film is based on an adapted screenplay from a Japanese book (ie. "Infamous" isn't a remake of "Capote"). I don't see you guys on the "A Fistful of Dollars" forum complaining. And being it a book the film is based on, I don't see you guys on the "Throne of Blood" forum complaining the Japanese are taking Shakespeare's stories, either.

Oh, yeah, and you guys rated the American-made film "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" as the third highest film on the IMDb. Tolkien wasn't American either.

reply

That's because The Lord of The Rings was a great series in books AND movies, who cares if he was American or not?

The reason why the United States has to buy rights to foreign films is because of a thing called copyright infringement. You can use an idea of a film without having to buy rights to it.

"A love story about a man who works somewhere distant and gets married to foreigner who he never meets."
-That can be adapted to a film without breaching copyright. But if you're using more than one scenario of the same movie you'd need to buy rights to that movie.

In all honesty though learn to debate without having to be so hostile.

I heard a rumor today that the producer of many of the American remakes of Japanese and Korean films said that he is intending to remake Failan . . .
And when the re-make is done, maybe a Korean film company can re-make the re-make

reply

Although I hate when americans remake korean cinema, this one may actually work. I think Philip Seymour Hoffman would be a great pick to play the main lead. Vadim Perelman gets to direct the remake who did a good job with "House of Sand and Fog". No information yet on who will play the role of Failan. My personal pick would be Claire Danes. Thoughts?

reply

Why remake a GREAT movie?...........can't people read subtitles?.......This should not even be a thread.

reply

We shouldn't forget that though Failan is a great movie, it's a remake of a japanese movie called Love Letter (not the one directed by Shunji Iwai)...

reply

True.
