Another great dutch movie from the Netherlands that you should see is the movie "Siberia" from 1998. It takes place in Amsterdam.
shareI am from Holland and I think it's the greatest Dutch movie ever. Also one of my favoutite movies both dutch as american or whatever. There is a movie called "de lift" and a movie called "amsterdamned". Both starring Huub Stapel. Those were nice movies to me. But they are a bit old now so it might be not so exciting for you. But I have to admit to the Dutch people here, I don't know real much about Dutch movies especially when they're a bit older.
shareConsidering how bad the acting usually is in Dutch films (and how there's always this annoying emphasis on rough sex scenes), Van God Los is almost un-Dutch in style, quality and storytelling.
I wouldn't call it the best Dutch movie ever, though. It's too mouch drama too my taste and some of the actors are too much 'soap star' to be taken seriously in their roles. Try "Karakter" (won Academy award for best foreign movie some ten years ago) or almost anything by Alex van Warmerdam ("De Jurk", "Abel").
It's good.. on a Dutch scale, but not the best one there is..
My Dutch film top 3:
1. Spoorloos
2. Simon
3. Abel
I hardly think you could call this movie the greatest movie ever.. Unless you've never seen any other movies that is.
It was good. It had a fresh feel to it, but it wasn't very innovative.
It bothers me that so many people seem to forget movies like Turks Fruit and Keetje Tippel.
Okay, I admit, they're both pretty old, but nevertheless impressive.
I'm usually not a big fan of Dutch movies, because the emphasis is mostly on sex and faul language, but this one moved me. Compared to American films this one wasn't particularly violent, not sexual in the Dutch-movie-way, and the acting was excellent.
Angela Schijf continues to annoy me however. Could be simply because of the sound of her voice though. She is a bit too hysterical for me, no matter what she does. And, every time I hear her speak I keep thinking of Beugelbekkie and Eline Bereklauw. However, Egbert Jan Weeber and Tygo Gernandt were excellent.
Despite other people's opinions, I think this movie did have a point. A moral if you will. This is clearly stated when Sef wants to rob the old people, and Stan comes to realize what they've really been doing all this time.
Also I thought there was a clear focus on the bond between Maik and Stan more than anything else. I personally thought this was very realistic.
Well, this is my two cents worth..
simon
all stars
cloaca
de passievrucht
van god los very good as well!
in no particulair order dutch films i liked:
soldaat van oranje
schatjes
karakter
keetje tippel
amazones
turks fruit
vet hard
and van god los ofcourse
there are more, but these come in mind. all great in there own time. just my taste.
maybe someday there will be more movies that'll hit the international market. i just hope that movies don't try to do that. Fighting Fish tried that. they spoke english for the international market. at least hire some actors then that can speak desent english.

Yes, a Soldier of Orange was a remarkable film. Yes, B-C, your comments are accurate: this film sucked, just as remarkably.
As for Scorsese's style, he lost that years ago, so this guy couldn't have stolen it. Scorsese is like Jake LaMotta(Raging Bull). He's been in the ring too long, and no one can tell him he's just a bum and a has-been now.
[deleted]
Black Cherry this film ain't that violent and it doesn't circle around on the violence. You want emotion? Well there was plenty of emotion in this film so I don't know what you're talking about. That you don't like the movie, okay, but you say you don't like it because it circles around the violence and there is no emotion.
shareEspecially young people liked this movie, because there are no better ones to compare it with. Not this genre in these last years, that I can recall anyway. I did love the movie, but to say it's the best ever made, is almost offensive. All the great movies about the second world war, movies from people like say Paul Verhoefen and a few nice ones far and in between. But a movie based on an actual event is something that's rather new. All of a sudden there's a movie about the murder of Pim Fortuyn (06-05)and The Referent (De Dominee) based on a Dutch crimeboss (De Hakkelaar). I think that's rather new, allthough we've had movies before about real events, but not like these, real people with out of the ordinairy lives.
Second, I don't agree what you said about Scorsece. Ofcause his old work is great, but I also liked his new work. Goodfellas was the last that really rocked my world, but that doesn't mean that Casino, Gangs of New York and The Aviator weren't great as well. Just not thát great. But you can't always make the same kind of movies, that's why I liked it to see that a man like Scorsese dare to make a movie like The Age of innocence, no matter if you like these movies or not. After all these years you still cant put Scorsese in a 'box'.
Back to Van God Los. I give it a 8/10, also because all the lead actors had to speak in an accent even the germans never mastered. Maybe they should have deepend the characters a little bit more, but besides that, thumbs up!!
"The owls are not what they seem" (Twin Peaks; Fire, Walk with me)
If you think this movie circles around violence, you clearly don't get the movie. The movie circles around friendship till the end.

Nobody here seen Wilde Mossels? Damn..
Although the term Great Dutch Film is a bit of a contradiction, there are some really god ones out there. Mainly the ones already listed above.
My personal favorites, in particular order (and some that I haven't seen yet but are regarded as good films):
Wilde Mossels
Soldaat Van Oranje
Als Je Begrijpt Wat Ik Bedoel
Allstars
Flodder
Van God Los
Off Screen
- - - - -
Simon
Cloaca
De Aanslag
Karakter
De Vierde Man
So, no, not the greatest dutch film ever. It's too shallow for that, but nonetheless (gotta love that word!) a great accomplishment and an intense film.

De Tweeling
Karakter
Abel
And the Dutch excel in kids movies. Most Dutch kids movies are among the greatest in their genre. Unlike Hollywood kids movies, the Dutch understand that kids are a lot smarter than most people would treat them.
By the way, "Vet Hard" is a poor remake of a Danish movie.
Check out: In China They Eat Dogs II
De Lift
Temminck: The Ultimate Fight
Van God Los
I believe in china they eat dogs 2 is actually called 'old men in new cars' (or something like that), and it's a prequel to 'in china they eat dogs'
don't ask...
No question about it: Turks Fruit ( Turkish Delight )
Eric
ps The greatest preformance by a dutch actor? ( maybe a new topic?? )
Rutger Hauer in Blade Runner!!
Jeroen Krabbé in deuce bigalow euraopean gigolo... nah just kidding :P
don't ask...
Wilde Mossels?
I'd definitely put it on my worst films of all time list.
It's a fact that Dutch movies aren't to good. A nice un-Dutch dutch movie is called shouf shouf habibi. It's about the morrocans in holland. Very funny as i remembered. And i can remember a great belgian movie: cest arrive pres de chez vous. But thats clearly an other county. lol
Soldaat van Oranje is the best dutch movie ever made.
It will never be topped (not in my book at least :D )
i live in Australia and i stumbled across this movie on our multi-cultural channel just the other night and it blew me away. i dont know of any other Dutch movies but it DOES rank as one of the best movies ive seen in my life so far.
shareSoldier of orange... soldaat van oranuje is the best dutch movie
I'm from Holland but I try to avoid Dutch films as much as I can. I must admit that Dutch films aren't really that good; the vast majority is actually quite bad in my opinion. However, there are a couple of exceptions. There are only four Dutch films I can think of that I would actually recommend to people. They are "Soldaat van Oranje" (Soldier of Orange) by Paul Verhoeven, "Max Havelaar" by Fons Rademakers, "Karakter" (Character) by Mike van Diem, en "Van God Los".
shareWat ben je dan voor nep-Nederlander..
Dutch movies are very good especially movies from the seventies and eightys but Van God Los is good to..
My top is
1. Amsterdamned
2. Flodder 3
3. Soldaat van Oranje (Soldier of Holland)
4. Van God Los
5. Brandende Liefde (Burning love)
6. Turks fruit (Turkish fruit)
7. Flodder 2
8. Flodder 1
9. De Lift (The elevator)
10. Ik ben Joep Maloen (I am Joep Maloen)
11. Ciske de Rat (Ciske the Rat)
12. All Stars
13. Spetters
14. Filmpje! (Movie!)
15. De Kleine Blonde Dood (The Little Blond Death)
16. Hufters en hofdames
17. Schatjes
18. Flirt
19. Costa!
20. Jezus is een Palstijn (Jesus is a Palestinian)
Wat ben je dan voor nep-Nederlander..Eentje die zich schaamt voor de cinema van z'n eigen land.
GOdforsaken is also Based on a true story.
Nobody is mentioning the Dutch movie "Lek" which means that one is really underrated. Give it a shot. Just the opening scene alone is worth it.
shareI think Soldaat van Oranje, De Tweeling and Ciske de Rat are better.
shareI Think Godforsaken is the best till now !
And i liked " Temmink " and " De Dominee " to :)
Simon is the best imo, great drama with Dutch comedy
