He's got enough money so...

When in the world will Stern get control of these channel 9 shows and release them already? I'm currently unemployed and almost going broke but I would still run out and buy them. They were shown here in Chicago on a crappy UHF station, I think 60 or 66, not sure. It was the best damn thing on TV on a Saturday night. C'mon Howard...GET GOIN' ON THIS!

I remember Howard talking about the shows and Private Parts one time that he wanted to purchase both for re-releases. But neither would sell. I think he said the channel 9 shows are sitting in a warehouse somewhere doing nothing but collecting dust.

Howard can be somewhat entertaining. But to me, his comedy is pretty sophmoric.

I can find much better comedy on the radio. Hey, listen to Airhead America! You'll get much bigger laughs!!! Now there is a show that is comedy!

After rewatching these shows I have to say that a HUGE obstacle to releasing them is probably the music rights. Nearly every show had at least one or two songs that would require some substantial licensing fees. In fact I'm surprised they aired such a low budget show with non-public domain music.

reply

Howard said fairly recently that he'd like to release them but Channel 9 (or whoever own it) won't sell him the rights, despite doing nothing with them themselves, which understandably pisses him off. They're terrific shows and deserve a DVD, and I think they'd sell pretty well, so I'm not entirely sure what Channel 9's (or whoever's) motivation is in not selling them to Howard. He said he'd pay well, too. . .

Music rights can indeed be a bitch -- the main reason that the SCTV DVDs cost so much and took so long to get released was that the musical bits were so tightly interwoven into the skits that they pretty much had to pay whatever the asking price was for the music or the shows would end up basically butchered. SNL on the other hand could've cut out any music performances that were too expensive if they wanted to -- same with most of the Stern programs, I would imagine.

BTW: I always thought that Howard's great duet with Janis Ian mocking Jerry Seinfeld was on his New Years Rotten Eve show but it's not on the VHS I have. Anyone know where I can find the lovely "At 17" duet?

IMO it has nothing to do with money on channel 9's part.
I watched the show when it originally aired and recorded a bunch to VHS with a top of the line Sony VCR.
It was always a battle with WWOR to get each show done and Howard was always fighting them over one thing or another, budget, censorship, you name it.
Long story short they don't like Howard, they hate the show and just want to bury it in a deep hole and forget it ever happened. Why do you think they ask people to send them VHS tapes? They want to get rid of the evidence and want to prevent people from copy them to dvds, Youtube and torrent sites.
Now I'm sure everyone has a theory on WHY they hate the show but no doubt the KKK guy is a big reason in this day and age of political correctness.

These shows need to be remastered & restored before they are lost forever by degradation. I have them all but the quality of audio & video is poor. I've been watching them regardless.
I love when they locked Bob Geldof in the trunk of a car.
