When I first realized that the bad guys were selling these boys to be adopted by rich families, I thought, well that doesn't sound so bad, maybe they're just going about it the wrong way. These kids don't have families or a very good life where they were living. But why couldn't they just be legally adopted? And why are they stealing kids so old that they could understand what was happening and rat on bad guys and the adoptive parents if they weren't happy...
I'm sure there must be more to this that I don't know?

actually, i got the impression they were being sold into sexual slavery. It's never stated, but given their age and the fact that they COULD "rat on (the) bad guys", i have to assume they're sold/"adopted" into situations where they would have no opportunity to "rat" on anyone. With that being the case, sexual slavery is the most likely scenario.
