why do women in the film go mad for him (literally)? He's not bad looking for sure but he's an emotionless cold fish of an ass hole with the charisma of a plank of wood? I know it's part of the plot but the writers could have given some charm to make it more understandable. Or is it the trying to tame the bad boy thing?
Yes indeed! When you try to tame a bad boy, or you are after the bad boy's money and title, you do not go crazy. You act according to plan; in a cool brain, step by step. Besides, it was not money or position. They did plan to catch the biggest fish in the jar, but the way the film shows how Sandarine practically gets mesmerized at first sight and remains speechless, pursuing money or position has little to do with it.
I do not believe a more charming looking and behaving Frenchman was not found anywhere. Even Delacroix looked better than him if you ask me.
The film has one other big problem though. With Christophe dead, his sis and Sandarine kept on living on his wealth. But how can they two go along? His sister was practically a female counterpart of Christophe. Living with her would be a nightmare. The director got dodgy and did not give one clue on it. Since each and every step of the proceeding of events were elaborated in such intimate detail, compared to that, the ending was much too rash. And there was no reason for Nathalie and Sandarine not seeing each other again. They could meet everyday if they wanted to. They did not have a conflict of interest any longer. Sandarine would not seduce the baldy prison gatekeeper (hopefully!).
I'm so glad to see someone else with a similar opinion. I felt the film had a big hole in it whenever they required Christophe to be so utterly irresistible that every woman would fall desperately in love with him, prior warning or not. Delacroix was MUCH more attractive to me also, even on first sight, and even more so after becoming sincerely smitten with Sandrine.
He's the son of the owner in failing health, expected to inherit the wealth of the company...with so much money that he burned francs in a restaurant. Can't believe you need more than that.
because he's supposed to be cursed. it's an "other worldy" thing. everyone who comes in contact with him will become insane. yeah, he had money and looks and supposedly was supposed to be "charming" and "seductive" albeit in a sociopathic way. but ultimately it was because he was cursed by "evil spirits" or what have you that they would all becaome possessed, go insane, kill themselves etc. i'm guessing the only one who was immune was his sister he was having the incestuous relations with because, firstly it seemed she was the only woman or person for that matter he "loved" or seemed to care about in his twisted way and secondly because she is also supposed to be "cursed", and cold like him probably having been "reared" by him to be like him after the mother died mysteriously (murdered or by the curse or really just a sudden heart attack? i think we are supposed to wonder about that)
that's my interpretation of the story being put across. we keep having the "curse" or "evil" represented by the woman shrouded in black with the raven..or eagle whatever.
but yeah, really without the spooky ~curse~ business thrown in there really seemed to be nothing all that about the Christophe character, besides him being predictably rich and bonkers.
The money, privilege and good looks dress it up; but his real appeal is he is a challenge. He is unavailable emotionally.
This is the reverse of Nathalie's plan to make a man so crazy about a woman that he is willing to do anything for her.
Christophe is a creepy guy and unattractive. I think there was something wrong with him before his mother died. A normal 9 year old doesn't react like that. As Delacroix began to tell the story, I imagined he was a helpless 3 year old who was unable to get help. But he was NINE!
So Christophe told no one his mother lay dead on the floor; but watched her rot for days.
His incestuous love for his sister is selfish, too. That kind of cavedweller mentality exists when a guy is too frightened of losing his identity and stays safely within the family unit. How young she must have been when he made his first overtures!
