I liked the ending. (SPOILERS)

I liked how Natalie DID NOT kill herself and killed the guy instead. If this was a straightforward porn/softporn-whatever movie, you KNOW the girl would've killed herself. Because women who use sex for their own means is evil according to the Great Patriarchy. ;)

And the girls got what they wanted in the end, and it's only the manipulative, full-of-himself idiot who died anyway. So cheers, love a happy ending. :)

I've seen some comments on this board saying this is a porn movie pretending to be an art flick but I think it's pretty arty... it keeps subverting expectations of what would happen (porn is obvious). I could see certain elements of gratuity but all films have aspects of a screenwriter/director's indulgence.

what you'll notice is that, for quite a few people, any film that contains sex (simulated or otherwise) is pornographic. that's whether the sex is presented in a realistic or stylized way. so, i won't even bother addressing what those folk might think about this film here.

this film is definitely not going mainstream anytime soon. it might not even get a lot of play in so-called art house cinemas. it is rather explicit in places; and there's enough typically french intellectualism to frighten off even some hardcore art film lovers. i rated it a "7" because i like what it becomes once it 'goes around the narrative bend.' it's part social polemic, and part erotic thriller. and, the mood starts out closer to the comedic end of the spectrum, but winds up in very dark waves indeed. it's got feminist aspirations, but exclusively female nudity. i'd be kind of hesitant to recommend it meant for a predominantly female or male audience because of that.

i will say, though, that i gave it that "7" mainly because i just think it should be seen (to be believed). it's far more daring than any conventional film you're gonna see made in the u.s. (again, it's typically french), except - and this was an obvious comparison for me - "eyes wide shut." and, of course, that was made by a british director. see it, and keep and open mind going in.

The ending is one big goof. It supposedly occurs years after the shooting, but the actors look even younger than they did at the beginning of the film!
