Not sure what a meecrob is, but i thought the film was great. I think the box art and the fact that its directed by a known horror director just misleads people into thinking its a horror film.
i liken it to midnight clear and thin red line: stripped down war movies that arent about wowing an audience with spectacular battles and effects.

I think that's it, I think people mistakenly rent the film at times thinking it's a war or horror movie, so they're surprised when it's something different...

i just picked this DVD up in a second hand store today, (ex-rental copy) just watched it and found it to be an extremely fine film. The cover art here in Australia is much different to the US copy, with more emphasis on the kids with guns, and the german troops. It was in fact the comment (from an unknown critic) that states "in the tradition of the Thin Red Line" that got my attention. TRL is my favourite film of all time, but also 'A Midnight Clear' and 'Saints and Soldiers' match this genre, and on the other side 'Deathwatch' and 'the Bunker' are more obviously horror based exercises, and also very likeable films because of their gothic, Ambrose Bierce style story telling.
But mostly, Straight into Darkness, is so very well photographed and the Gothic images remain memorable, most memorable being the hanged wedding party, the ruins of the school and the church, and the girl with the masked face which recalls some of the great gothic stories of the 19th century.
I am sure some people will be disappointed with this film. It is not a war or horror film, but it is a human tragedy set during a horrific war. The 'battles' were really only skirmishes as this was the last weeks of the war, and certainly the flashbacks/memories could be confusing, though they do provide that 'Thin Red Line' emotional connection to the story.
I find truely intelligent films from this genre very rare, and overall this is a very fine, low budget, little gem of a film. I'd give it 9/10 with extra points for imagination.
Cool.
I find this "cover art here in Australia is much different to the US copy, with more emphasis on the kids with guns, and the german troops" really interesting. I know that a lot of films have varying cover art in different countries... in some cases, I wonder why? I guess it depends on the audience...
