New Zealand films

Ok, so this movie is awesome, but I'm curious, how many non-new zealanders have seen it? I wasn't even that aware that this film was known anywhere other than here- it's not even that popular here. Tell me where you're from and what other New Zealand films you have seen. Totally interested :D

NB. Lord of the Rings IS NOT a New Zealand film.

I saw this movie. It is my first New Zealand film. I am from Arizona =)

What other NZ films do you recommend?

reply

hmmm well we don't seem to offer much in the way of comedy- the cinema of unease. a good (kinda scary) one would be heavenly creatures. if you're after typical new zealand culture blah blah try Whale Rider, or for a awesome funny one Siones Wedding is always good. Cheesey movies like The Locals are also kinda scary/funny. Goodbye Pork Pie. Oooooh give Once Were Warriors a try, or Out of The Blue... they aren't films you like, they are films you appreciate because they are pretty intense but you won't forget them in a hurry... ok i could write for hours but ask me more if you wanna :)

Im from Scotland and I watched the movie last night, thought it was pretty good.I haven't seen any other New Zealand films but I'll look out for the ones you recommended.

reply

hehe the locals is a kiwi film, I'm from nz and I thought it was quite cheasy, but spooky in some places.

good for a friday night. =)

reply

haha very true. saw it at the movies and we were the only people there. was awesome!

reply

more recommendations, please =)

I'm looking for more relationship kind of films. Ones that focus on the people and places.

I'd definitely recommend "Heavenly Creatures" and "In My Father's Den". Both have the same kind of brooding beauty about them and are quite brilliant. But "Rain" is still my favourite.

I'm Swedish and I've seen it, enjoyed it. I wasn't too fond of the ending, but other than that it was one of the more potent "suburban lurking middle-class angst" dramas that I've seen. I really like the atmosphere and the melancholia in it. The reason that I knew about the film was that I read that Neil Finn, whose work I am a big fan of, had done the music for it, and I wasn't disappointed with the soundtrack at all.

But I'm also a big consumer of kiwi culture in general (I've always been interested in NZ since I grew up in a neighbourhood that was, oddly enough, named "New Zealand" after an NZ missioner or something, I think.) Other films I've seen include obviously "Heavenly Creatures", "Once Were Warriors", "An Angel at my Table" but also some (internationally, that is) lesser-known gems like "The Quiet Earth" (one of my favourite films ever!), "Goodbye Pork Pie" and "The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey". I had huge expectations for "In My Father's Den" but I found it somewhat lacking, maybe I was hoping for too much. The scenery was of course stunning, though.

There are several others, but I can't think of any at the top of my head. I think my next kiwi flick will be "Whale Rider", which I've strayed away from since it has been so hyped, but now I think I'll be able to watch it with an open mind. I'm also anxious to see "River Queen". If anyone has any other recommendations, I'd gladly take them.

An excellent list.

Once Were Warriors is one of my favorites. And The Quiet Earth is a classic of its genre.

I would add:

Utu -- a historical, but nicely done
Vigil -- 84 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088355/
Smash Palace -- starring Bruno Lawrence of The Quiet Earth.

Also, anyone interested in NZ should see Peter Jackson's Forgotten Silver. Absolutely amazing and it's all "true" !

Yeah, Stickmen and GB Pork Pie are good.
Here's some more I don't think got mentioned if you seriously need to watch every half decent NZ movie:
Bad Taste, Braindead, The Devil Dared Me To, The Price of Milk, and Snakeskin..

reply

Lol the Frighteners, can't believe I forgot about that one..
The bit where Micheal J. Fox and the girl are having dinner in the nice restaurant is filmed at the Takahe restaurant in Christchurch, which is like 2 doors down from our house. Most of it was in Lyttleton though I think, good movie anyways.

Boy (quite recent) is another fantastic Kiwi film.. has the melancholic atmosphere which is somewhat typical of many NZ films but also some fantastic humour and solid performances. Highly recommend.
Oh for Christ's sake, at least lie quickly!
