Are New Zealander's bad actors?

hi, i'm from New Zealand and i was wondering of people actually think New Zealanders are bad at acting...? I know it might be a bit strange to ask but i want to know!

reply

Some are, some aren't. Just like any other group you might care to make a category of.

I happen to think of late that New Zealand has made some *beep* terrific films, such as Lord of the Rings (& King Kong, maybe), but also Rain, In My Father's Den (although Matthew MacFadyen is English its still a NZ film)and Whale Raider are some of the best movies Ive ever seen.

Unlike my country Australia, which year after year gives us the same half-arsed crap that shouldnt be seen. I watched the first ten minutes of 'One Perfect Day' and gave up. And who here has heard of 'You and Your Stupid Mate?' Yeah, thought so.
When it comes to film, the NZealanders have us beat.

You think Australia is bad with the same thing over and over again, you ought to try the US. It's like there's a factory that has monkeys coming up with stupid plots, then machines churn out the terrible movies. Hundreds and hundreds a year. It's ridiculous. Perhaps two or three percent of films made each year in the US are worth anything.

Maybe dominique, e perception that NZ'ers are bad actors because the accent is instantly recognisable to you, and therefore you are able to pick out subtle differences in tone that sound forced.

I think Kiwis are great actors b/c they (tend to) work in all the mediums - theatre, film, voice overs...
the acting schools in the country are top notch. I hope a lot of them DON'T go to Hollywood but stay in Aotearoa and make great films about New Zealand and her people.

reply

Yeah, Martin Csokas is a great actor.

I think NZ actors are very good and very inspiring (spot the fan!)

reply

Isn't Russell Crowe from New Zealand? He's a good actor. I've seen a few movies with some Maoris like 'Once Were Warriors' and I thought that it was an excellent movie with some fine acting. I also think that Martin Csokas is pretty good too.

reply

Yeah, Crowe is a kiwi too :)
They're both amazing actors (Crowe and Csokas) in my opinion too. Unfortunatelly, Marton isn't always offered the best roles, so he doesn't have the chance to shine (take XXX or Bourne Supremacy for example) like he did in Rain, Asylum or Aeon Flux.
Here's to them, damn good actors.

I love New Zealand actors. Marton Csokas and Karl Urban are among my favorites!!

reply

Definitely not! As well as the aforementioned great actors from NZ, what about Sam Neill!
