Thought provoking movie...

This movie comes off to many on this board as a Romeo and Juliet tragedy but I see it as a family trying to keep the integrity of their family flourishing… Our basic animal instinct, which we as humans has lost our way by pursuing impulsive gratification without purpose. There is nothing wrong to be free to choose your mate but I don’t see anything wrong with having a more experience eye to help a less experience one. Choosing a mate might start out with seeking beauty but it doesn’t end there and this is what I believe these parents in this movie they were trying help their son along with the realities of life. A very crude way in handling such a personal situation but it was affective in preserving their family future.

I don't think he was with Judith because of animal instinct.

It is implied that he had a solid relationship with her - her daughter knew him and had a special name for him and wanted to see him, and Judith treated him harshly because she was losing the man she loved, she was extremely upset, and she was perhaps trying to wake him up to her feelings and provoke him into action, or at least to make a definitive decision (marry me forever or leave).
