What happens to the money *spoiler*

What happens to the money after Roth dies? Does the detective search his pockets or find the key or just kiss it goodbye and consider it well spent to live?

And why did he try to follow through with the hit in the first place?

And who turned out to be the serial killer in the end?

Common sense would mean that Det. Young would simply search for the money in Dwyer's apt (or else look for the key in his apt, since Dwyer is not dumb, he surely picked it up underneath the phone booth).

Dwyer followed through with the hit because he was jealous of Young. Remember, Dwyer was an ex-cop who beat a young cop nearly to death because he was getting more recognition. This led to Dwyer being fired and imprisoned, and he became a security guard. When he looked at Young's commendations and photos, he literally saw himself in those awards. I was surprised too, at the end, why Dwyer didn't just take the money, because he was, after all, not dumb. But he made it personal, and perhaps even felt he was being investigated for killing Bracken, and thought it was a matter of time before he was caught, esp. since Det. Young was on the case. He admired Young, and even tried to solve part of his case for him (at Vick's bar), but failed. He was taunted by Bracken as never amounting to anything, yet he saw in Young all he wanted to be, but could not. So he made it personal, but in the end redeemed himself by not killing Young, and even giving him the clue that helped him solve the case.

The story is actually pretty good, since it starts with this young guy who feels he is a nobody and has accomplished nothing, but who is actually an accomplished detective, whereas the Real nobody is hired to kill him. But Dwyer (excellently done by Roth) even gets a dose of self respect just by being in the same apartment as Young, and kills his tormenter (Bracken) and touches his target/idol Det. Young.

I liked the movie.
