Is it me,

or can just put a long-haired wig, parted down the middle, and a short beard on almost anybody, and boom, he's Jesus.

Ha! Great line. Particularly interesting casting of Jesus in "Judas". Looked like they grabbed him from a community production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" (not a comment on his acting, but rather his appearance). And what was up w/ Bob Gunton as Caiaphas? I kept thinking "Why is the warden from "Shawshank Redemption" walking around with that bush on his chin?"

reply

No, freakin' joke! This movie was almost a comedy. The language was too venacular(normal or everyday) for me. Was this movie created for non Christians or children or others who do not know the stories of the Bible?

With phrases like "Come on, Jesus, you gotta chill out a little", I don't think it exactly fits the mold of "The Passion" precisely enough!

I also laughed when Jesus said to Judas "I want you to spend eternity with me and my Father...whadyasay?" As if Judas was going to reply "Cool, man".

Also, why did they cast Shaggy as Jesus? I kept waiting for the Mystery Machine to pull up.

It really was lame.

To cng777 and pauiboy:

Why couldn't Jews living in Israel in the First Century say something in Aramaic that was at least equivelant in meaning to things like "whadayasay?" in modern North Americn English? Although this is a fictional account and we can argue the merits of the writting, etc., it is based on and tries to depict very real events and situations that involved very real people, and they weren't all rich and well educated. Besides, it may have been an attempt to broaden the appeal of the movie with dialouge that didn't sound like King James English, or the very self concious attempts to modernize King James English that usually pass for more modern veresions of the Bible. It may not have worked, but I applaud the effort.

PS I think that Bob Gunton is a great actor and played the role of Caiaphas very well. I also thought that his hair and beard in the role were very appropriate for the character and were amongst the best wigs and fake beards I've ever seen on TV or in a movie. Mr. Gunton and the hair and makeup (and costume for that matter) people that worked on him for this movie all did an amazing, wonderful job of coming together to realize the character of Caiaphas as he was portrayed in the script.

In response, you're quite right - the Jews living in Israel in the First Century may have some Aramaic equivilent to "whadysay?". It's just that it seemed to add to the "hippie-like" Jesus that they put out there. I understand your point about attempting to broaden the appeal. Perhaps a television version of the Living Bible vs. the King James Version. If they really had that in mind (and I'm not so sure, though it's possible), then I appreciate the effort. I also appreciate the effort of Pontiac to make a different looking car...but the Aztek is still incredibly ugly. Big deviation there, but the point is the same. I will join you in applauding the effort...it's unfortunate that the result (in my opinion) was so poor.

Also, we must both be Bob Gunton fans. The challenge w/ someone like him is that his look and voice are so unique and distinct, he stands out in every role. Perhaps that's part of his success. I don't think he's ever done a bad job in any of his roles. In this particular instance, I thought the movie was so poor (despite their best effort to do something different) that even he couldn't rescue it. The project didn't suffer from bad acting - even the surfer-dude-like Jesus did an OK job - given the script.

And I'm glad you liked his beard. I still think it looked more like a bush. Maybe Caiaphas's beard looked like one as well....

Is it just me, or did some of the Apostles (in the movie) have British accents?

"I KNOW YOU ARE STUPID PRIVATE PYLE, BUT DO YOU REALLY NOT KNOW YOUR LEFT FROM YOUR RIGHT?"

It wasn't just you. One of the things I liked about the "Passion" was that it wasn't it English - thus no American or British accents.

"Judas" at times seemed like a Monty Python skit.

For starters, let me say that I agree with the whole idea of there being an Aramaic equivilent to "whadysay?" From what I gathered from the film, it was nice to see Jesus and the apostles as more human (insert my ducking and covering from the imminent mud-slinging Bible beaters here) because they were, in fact, human.

Admittedly, the acting and filmography weren't exactly of a hollywood blockbuster qualily, but I think the film still managed to get a very important point accross - history has been very quick to characterise Judas as pure evil and like the three apostles said at the very end of the film Jesus would have wanted people to forgive Judas.

And the whole "hippie-like quality" of Jesus and the apostles is actually kind of accurate (ducking and covering again) because when you think of it, they had the same peacemaking and loving quality as the hippies of the 60' in America. Jesus was essentially preaching "Make love, not war". Quite frankly, I would imagine that people would have been more willing to listen to that kind of attitude when they were constantly being threatened by the "tyrannical rulers" of Rome (or at least that's how history has portrayed them).

All in all, it was a pretty decent movie.

cng777 - if you feel you have to explain a word just after you've used it don't use the word. As long as you think you're clever, it doesn't matter what people you'll never meet think.

I haven't seen this film yet but I kinda agree that you can put a beard and and some long hair on a man and he will look like Jesus, any man at all could.

Now everyone in this thread basically is saying that this was more, well let's say in my words modernish than anything else and using phrases that you think that people of that time would not use, I tend to disagree right there, of course back then in the language that was spoken, anyone could say "Hey, what's up man" or "Yeah, cool", so not very unlikely at all. It was probably said, but no one knows that for sure, not even me, this is just my opinion.
