This movie is unforgettable for all the wrong reasons. Gamma dogs, Absorbing Man being Hulk's father, and one of the most bizarre climactic fights in the history of cinema. "TAKE IT AAAAAAAWWWWWLLLLL!"

My opinion, as I've stated elsewhere on this board, is that the film's generally bad reception is because it wasn't a dumbed-down schlock-fest of ninety minutes devoted to smashing stuff. Ang Lee tried to craft a thought-provoking story very heavy on symbolism, which viewers simply didn't want. For better or for worse, people generally want to turn off their brains and see things smack into other things. Look at the recent Marvel movies for evidence of that. Plot hole out the wazoo with dialogue that's absolutely mind-numbing, but they make a bazillion dollars because they're not trying ot be anything but smash-fests.

I don't think that's inherently wrong, though I admit it's rather disappointing.

I don't think it "deserves" hate, actually I love the film.

Really the only things people can come up with as criticism is "too much dialogue", "mutant dogs" or whining about David Banner creating Hulk.

Horrible film making putting in split-screen panels. It reminded me of the old Electric Company Spiderman scenes where they'd have the actors freeze frame and then go to the next one.

Even if that is the case, that doesn't mean they are wrong.

It means to me that they're making the film out to be one of the worst ever when actually it's more related to personal preference than anything else. I had avoided this movie and when I watched it I found myself liking it a lot. Those elemeents did not bother me or take anything from the movie.

The panels were sometimes distracting but again, didn't make the film bad for me.

There are movies which I like yet most others consider to be bad. Their opinion of the movie doesn't take away from my enjoyment of it.

I just don't try to convince anyone that just because I liked the movie means the movie isn't bad.

reply

Okay. Cool.

Then I would expect others not to convince me a movie is bad because they consider it to be.

And yet, when the general consensus is that the movie is bad, it is usually a pretty good indicator that the movie is bad.

I like this movie. Others don't. That's okay. It doesn't indicate anything much to me because opinions are subjective. And critics' opinions as well.

It's overall is very boring when the hulk is not on screen. Ang lee fell to much in love with the character himself he forgot to make the story not boring. But there was a plot the villains had motives and it was well acted.

It's a fascinating film for sure, and I personally enjoy it significantly more than Marvel's own 2008 Incredible Hulk (don't get me wrong, I enjoy that film, but I just prefer this)... but that being said, I can understand why many don't like it.

It's a strangely cerebral "art-house" take on a classic comic character. It's just not the film a lot of people expected or wanted. It's clear Ang Lee wanted to make something more provocative and complex, but it just didn't jive well with the Hulk character for many audiences.

It's a very "out there" film that puts it focus more on what makes Bruce/Hulk tick than on the Hulk himself.

But I appreciate Lee's attempts at telling the story he wanted to tell, the stunningly beautiful direction and imagery, the magnificent score (one of Elfman's most underrated gems) and the pure creativity of the project. Some (perhaps many) might consider it a bit of a "failure" for not connecting to audiences the way other superhero movies do... But if it is a "failure", then it's certainly an interesting, intriguing and gorgeous one.

And FURTHERMORE, this is my signature! SERIOUSLY! Did you think I was still talking about my point?

reply

I don't know, but this is the only incarnation of the Hulk that's interesting to me. I actually really enjoy this movie. It was Marvel's 2008 Hulk movie that put me to sleep. I'm a big fan of Ang Lee, so maybe I'm biased, but I liked everything about this movie. And I've never liked the Hulk as a character.

I don't know. Maybe liking Lee and not liking the Hulk is why it works for me. If I was a Hulk fanboy, maybe I would have hated it. *shrugs*

I too think it is hated too fiercly, but it is no masterpiece as some of its defenders claim. It was an Okay movie and for a movie - unique take on Hulk.
