Why do fans of this movie act like this is an arthouse masterpiece?

Every time someone claims that they liked the 2008 movie better, or that this movie was boring, a fan of this movie will claim that this movie is some kind of masterpiece, and usually attack the first poster and the later movie.

Seriously, this movie is the definition of a pretentious movie. Just because it is overlong and is edited in a comic book like manner, does it means it is a good movie.

Not that I want a brainless superhero movie, but if you have seen the rest of the MCU, you will see how can you make a good movie, that is also coherent and entertaining.

The director of this movie thought he could make a "tree of life" like movie. That's fine. But why direct a summer blockbuster, when you could easily make an original "artsy" movie.

I never felt this movie was "overlong", in fact every scene was meaningful. It's just a matter of personal taste. As far as I'm concerned, this film can rival any MCU movie and it's a lot more re-watchable.

And it's not that I don't like the newer films, I do, but "Hulk" is a much more ambitious one.

In a nutshell hulk fans are like the baseball fan who raves about a strikeout because they found something intriguing the batter seemed to be swinging the bat.

Every praise of this film is what it 'tried' to do or how different or ambitious it was; basically admitting that the film failed but they're giving it a pass based on how hard it tried.

Different does not equal good especially when it's a difference nobody asked for; nobody wanted to see the Hulk pondering life, they wanted to see him fighting villains. Nobody wanted a drama film, they wanted an action film.

reply

I'm aware that it has "failed" many people's expectations, but I'm not praising this film because it tried to be different and failed, I'm praising it because it worked for me and I really liked it.

reply

Exactly!! I enjoyed the Greek Tragedy take on the Hulk, and it's gravitas is what all the MCU films seem to be lacking, even if they are more audience friendly.

This is why the only "real" Marvel movie I actually like is the very first Iron Man. It had a similar view of the source material (though it obviously told a different story; one of redemption and personal journeys rather than fear of the self and struggling against oneself). I've seen that movie a skidillion times, and thoroughly enjoy it. The rest of the Marvel movies, especially the ones made by Marvel, are crap on a stick as far as I'm concerned--save Guardians of the Galaxy. It's just fun, and I enjoyed it for that. It wasn't trying for anything else.

This is what the original story is all about. The best Hulk so far.

This is what the original story is all about

How do you work that out? This was nothing like the original story of the origin of the Hulk!
This movie was just a rehash of Jekyll and Hyde with a bit of added science mumbo jumbo to flesh it out. Nothing "original" about any of it.

The stupid have one thing in common. They alter the facts to fit their views not the other way!

AGREED!!!

Even Stan Lee said the Hulk was inspired by Jecyll and Hyde.

I agree they do go overboard . It had a lot of potential. Overall tho I like the story and the characters and the motivations of the villains . The action is great to. When hulk is on screen it's the best. Like I said before . Ang lee fell to in love with the character himself he forgot to make the story not so boring. But overall it's a 3/5 the story motives acting is all there and find it just take awile to get there. The action and when hulk is on screen is truly fun .

What this movie was is a swing and a miss by a master. Lee tried to some things from an artistic stand point that ultimately did not work out. Things like the comic style split screen, the ultragreen Hulk....

This is a flawed movie to be sure but I can watch it and appreciate what he tried to do, which is step up the game in the comic movie industry. I would actually love a chance to sit down at talk to Ang Lee about this movie just to hear the thoughts behind many of his choices.

Pretentious stupid schlock OMG, the split screens of helicopters flying I am so blown away

reply

Actually given the technique use in other movies and TV, this seems to be more of a Fad of the times rather than some pretension. A lot of TV shows did this in the early 00s. Heck, some like Sanctuary and 24 made it a point to use this multiple times every episode.

True but at least in 24 it made sense since there were various groups acting separately but at the same time.

You do realize it was a comic movie, he used the panels like a COMIC. It was actually really cool and appropriate when it came out.
This is easily one of the best comic films and stands up over the years. The majority of the acting was great and the story was well done.

reply

Hmm, movies are not comic books and five panels of choppers flying over the desert for a minute are plain boring. The acting was good, they were good actors. That is as far as I would go.

reply

You are right, a book isn't a movie.

reply

The panels in a comic book are appropriate because the reader can examine each panel individually, taking time to enjoy the art. In a movie it's totally inappropriate. Even though a lot of the panels were of the same shot, splitting the viewers attention between several things at once is never a good idea. The Transformers movies does that, even without the panels, putting so much action on screen it's difficult to tell what's going on.
This movie sucked. Bad idea trying to turn a superhero movie about a guy who turns into a green rage monster into an artistic "think piece."
This is coming from someone who enjoys intelligent movies just as much as brainless action movies. This movie tried to be both and instead came off pretentious and boring.
The sequel with Edward Norton wasn't much better but at least it was FUN.
