References to other films
throughtout the film they reference a lot of other action movies. Leon and Desperado to name two. This film can no way even compare to the ones it tries to mimic.

shareAre you completely dumb or what?
Did you not notice that he talks about the movies directly after he's been using a shotgun disguised in flowers, similar to that of T2. The whole point is that it's taking the mick out of itself, it's not trying to mimic any of those movies.
know *beep* they are references, but that does belay the fact that all those movies he makes references to are 10 times better than this piece of trash. Him using a shotgun hidden in flowers just like T2, thats called mimicing in my book pal.

jeez have you never heard of irony!!! of course he's mimicking, that's part of the guys character, it's not as if the director is trying to copy T2 or anything!! chill out dude
he's definately retarded, the actual point of the references was to show more about andy lau's character. This guy glamorises what he does by doing each hit in the style of a famous movie. He actually discusses this with the girl in a cafe so if you'd watched the movie in any depth you'd know that.
So in summation, the movie wasn't copying these other films, the character was. Therefore it's quite an original plot device in that it is somewhat rare for movies to reference the real world of films unless in the form of parody(see last action hero)
Point cleared up?
In future try actually paying attention to films before you come on here and slag them off. Especially if it's one as good as this
YOU COMPLETE AND TOTAL W&NKER (DAMN YOU CENSORS FOR MAKING ME DO THIS)
ALL HAIL THE HIPPY FASCIST
What's your point? Don't be silly.
shareI haven't seen this movie, but reading the plot summary it kind of sounded like the Stallone/Banderas movie: Assassins...anyone can agree/confirm ? Also, is this movie worth buying ? I have an offer of 14 dollars to it...should I buy it ?

I watched Assasins but hardly recall it, but I do know I enjoyed this a lot better. Chin's role also made it nice, not just a dumb girl role in the movie, refreshing and also Simon Yam's role made it a little more interesting than just a cop out to get O and Tok. I think it's worth renting.

Tok makes references to other movies because he is something of a film buff. So it kind of makes sense that he would try to copy the killers of the movies he admires. Either way, just about every movie has elements similar to other movies.
shareI think there is also a reference to La Femme Nikkita also by Luc Besson. Tok stabs the guy in the hand and says he saw it in a french film, Nikita has a very similar scene, although the guy later says that he couldn't find anyone who knew what film he was talking about.
shareIt's probably also worth noting that the makers of "Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life" lifted parts of the score and one of the actors from this film to be a part of that Tomb Raider sequel. One has to wonder why that was done.
Fulltime Kiler is very similar to Assasins, but puts assasins to shame in my opinion, Full Time Killer is awesome!
shareThe movie that was made reference to by Alain Delon was Le Choc. Here is the list of connections.

Personally I thought it was a really good film. I thought the gun disguised as flowers was from Sonatine not Terminator 2 though seeing as the M4 in that had flowers literally attached to it. Hard Boiled had a gun hidden in a flower box and came out in the same year as T2 (Neither director knew of the others work); it'd be more likely it was a reference to that seeing as it was also a Far Eastern film.
shareThe reference in Fulltime Killer with the gun in the flowers was def. a reference to another film. But I do not think the original idea of the gun in the flowerbox is that original...its just a place to hide a gun. I would bet in the 20s mafia hitmen really did it with their tommy guns. I thought Fulltime Killer was a very solid effort and thought the movie was very original for the genre it is in. I thought it was creative to play off of these other movie references and get something completely original out of it. it is better to show your inspiration then to mask it IMO.
"who needs reasons when you have heroin?"

I agree to that!

Compared to the standard HK plotlines and dodgy acrobatics, it seemed quite solid.
Although it looked like they were running out of time and/or budget towards the end.
They all seem to be enjoying themselves except the stiff English-speaking ladycop who sounds like she's selling haemorrhoid cream.
The movie references are an HK device to portray an international cultural awareness in the pretender to the throne.
Expecting Hollywood conventions from HK movies is a fast track to disappointment.
The budgets are an order of magnitude apart.
I like it because it's lightweight and charming in a Luc Besson/Bertrand Blier kinda way, particularly the wonky hit in Macau.
Andy Lau does everything right, except the rice pudding.
I can only guess that the Olympic backstory was to keep Beijing onside.
I dont know if mimicking is the right word, i'd say mocking is. The movie even directly criticizes others. Example - Tok said desperados wasn't good, even if entertaining. Tok also talks about how even bad movies can have good trailers. I think the movie purposely takes all these direct references from other major action films and crams them all together in a ridiculous and unrealistic story to point out just silly, in fact, action movies are. At the end, the movie presents two possible outcomes, but never clearly shows which is the real one. Both of the offered endings are ludicrous, and i think it points out that endings in action movies in general are just as unbelievable. Bc the actual end is unclear, it tries to be satisfactory to both sides, just like how most action movies are predictably satisfying at the end. The movie is too silly for me to take it seriously, leading me to believe that it is more of a disguised critique.
shareSurely the correct word is satirising? Anyway, this dude loves his movies and he kinda plays scenes out through the job he does. I don't see it as the director copying through lack of imagination, its just the guys character.
shareIt's actually El Mariachi and not Desperado. Desperado was it's sequal. And El Mariachi WAS NOT very good. So there.
Tok also mentioned Leon. Actually the girl did. I believe she said something along the lines of "Yes I've seen Leon" while he was showing her how to use the rifle.
No... he was NOT talking about El Mariachi. He was talking about Desperado, saying it was stylish but wasn't that good, which is true. Desperado was stylish, but El Mariachi was the better movie.
Also the French film he was talking about was Le Samourai with Alain Delon. The movie that inspired The Killer by John Woo, and we all know John Woo is the master of stylistic violence which is a major influence on Fulltime Killer.
The point is that they're making references to the other movies as homages, not trying to rip them off. While not as good as some of the movies it parodies, it's still a good, fun movie in it's own right.
It's not mimicking, it's just giving a fun nod to other films. Chill out.
