What's the overall strategy for completing Inferno without cheats?

My strategy for DooM is pretty simple. I systematically secure and explore the area one by one. The maps in the first 2 episodes are structured to support this strategy meaning that by the time I'm done securing/exploring the area I usually know how to exit the map. I can do all this without having all the maps memorized, and I never do or have to until these days with the "secure and explore" tactic.

However, as soon as I start episode 3 (and 4 in Ultimate Doom), after the first level I realize this "secure and explore" tactic no longer works. I either run out of ammo from fighting too many enemies or get lost from running around trying to get away. I also find that there aren't enough non-hostile area to stop and consult the automap like in the first 2 episodes. I suspect that you might have to use a lot of stealth technique and sneak past enemies in these later episodes but I'm not very good at playing with this style.

Any of you experienced players want to shed some light on this?

Put on "always run". Aim well :)

I only just finished the game on the Xbox 360 BFG edition (better late then never, right), my strategy was mainly using my map and scavenging for ammo as much as I could. Meaning if I died, load the game from the last save (which was normally just going back to the beginning of the level considering how often I saved).

But with fighting enemies, I'd say constantly run, constantly shoot on target and use the most powerful gun you have.
