How to play doom on modern PCs

If you go out and buy the Doom collection, it comes with a front end that will allow you to play on modern systems. But that's no fun!

I found a piece of software called the King Doom Experience (google it) that contains a ton of source ports that gussy doom up with all kinds of graphic effects, extra functionality (you can look up and down now!!), and at long last... true 60FPS 3D!! It's scads of fun, and it'll make you see Doom in a whole new light... it also plays Heretic ^_-. Just download it and use the WAD files from the legal versions of the games.

You can also get DosBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1) and play the original software, without the needing of ports.

Thier is a good multiplayer free dowload for doom 1 (works best with doom 2 and final doom) that really kicks ass. You should try it, its called skull tag.

jDoom is cool because it supports 3D models. Me, I've been using Doom Legacy for a long time now. OpenGL, dynamic lighting, 32 players, plus it has DOS, Mac, Linux, OpenBSD, and even beta OS/2 versions available. http://legacy.newdoom.com

You know, if you just want to play Doom without all the frills, just go download Doom 95 (shareware) and you can play any of your Doom games on modern machines just by specifying the WAD file.

Thanks! I used to play this on my friends pc all the time in college, with White Zombie playing in the background. those were the days

I use Doomsday KickStart to play on Windows 7. It has some features to enhance the game.
