Ideal Film Cast

I know the film has been long cancelled, but maybe it'd be fun to dream up our ideal cast list.

I gave it a go myself but found myself struggling quite early on! Here's mine;

Sam Carter:
Max Chen: Shinya Tsukamoto
Maggie Chow: Gong Li
JC Denton:
Paul Denton:
Stanton Dowd:
Nicolette DuClare: Emilie Dequenne
Chad Dumier: Presley Chweneyagae
Morgan Everett: James Earl-Jones
Harley Filben: Armin Mueller-Stahl
Jojo Fine: Marlon Wayans
Jock Flanagan:
Joe Greene:
Gunther Hermann:
Alex Jacobson: David Cross
Juan Lebedev: Rufus Sewell
Joseph Manderley: Donald Sutherland
Anna Navarre: Helena Bonham-Carter
Bob Page: Kevin Spacey
Gordon Quick: John Lone
Janice Reed:
Gilbert Renton:
Sandra Renton:
Jaime Reyes: Michael Pena
Gary Savage:
Tiffany Savage:
Walton Simons:
The Smuggler: Don Cheadle
Howard Strong:

I've been trying to keep it as realistic as possible, by keeping the bigger names only really to the bigger parts.

Feel free to add your own and comment on my selections.

It would be hard that is for sure.

Definately for the characters of JC and Paul. Finding actors that resemble each other 99%. Would you do the unthinkable and get the same actor with a diverse range and use computers????

reply

Would that really be that hard. I mean how much screen time did JC and Paul have in the first game. The beginning at Liberty Island, in the hanger before you kill/ save Lebedev, in his apartment before the NSF HQ/warning mission, and depending on whether or you save him, back in China in Tong's hideout. It wouldn't be that hard. Though no movie adaption of any videogame followed the source material 100%, not every charater would make it on screen. The Rentons, Joe Greene, Harley Filben, the Smuggler, were all secondary characters.

There are some inspired choices on there! I can really see Helen Bonham Carter, David Cross and Kevin Spacey.
I'd say Ken Watanabe would be a good Tracer Tong. Chris Cooper as Sam Carter, Ralph Fiennes as Walton Simons, Neil McDonough as Jock Flanagan. And how about Christian Bale as JC Denton? I suppose having Arny as Gunther Hermann is way too obvious...

"Its not what you're saying! its all the stuff you're not saying! Insinuendos!"

reply

Christian Bale is probably the best guy for the role of JC.

Scott Speedman is also a possibility. He might be believable as JC's brother Paul too.

Arnie would be a great Gunther Hermann, but it's not likely to happen with his political career and all, he doesnt want to promote himself with Hermanns qualities.

James Morrison would make a good Jock.

Zita Görög might make a decent Navarre.

In all i'd prefer to see some authentic actors. Some that are german (in Hermanns case) or that sound germanic, rather than an American/Briton putting on an accent.

I think the film might do well with some relatively unknown actors too, instead of a bunch of massive hollywood stars.

reply

I've been thinking about this. Deus Ex would lend itself far more to, in my opinion, a TV show adaption as opposed to film.

The games big enough for at least 5 seasons worth of story arcs.

For example.

Season 1: The majority of season 1 is JC and Paul working for UNATCO. Plotlines generally similar to 'The Unit' - but not everything is as it appears. The season 1 finale is ended up with the cliffhanger of JC being told Paul has gone rogue.

Season 2: Similar to 'The Fugitive.' A main storyarc is JC hunting for Paul, believing he's a traitor. Finale would be similar to 'Lebedevs jet'.

Season 3: JC the Double Agent. He tries to find proof. He's eventually caught out when Paul contacts him, asking him to get a message to Silhouette. Season finale is him getting caught by Gunther.

Season 4: Think 24 season 5. JC on the run. Finale is probably versalife.

Season 5: Final season. Story focuses on JC's work against MJ12. Also side story arcs relating to UNATCO being taken over.

It's a brilliant idea you've got there, compel bast, and I would love to see it. If they simply stuck to the game's plot and characters it would be amazing. I mean, it could be a big hit, especially considering the current climate of fear of terrorism and distrust towards government, and there are so many twists and conspiracies in the game that reflect people's feelings in real life.

Sadly, I doubt anyone could ever get the funding for such a project based on a (relatively) obscure computer game. I live in hope though!

Two excellent points: a movie adaptation would be too short; a television series would do the game justice. It would allow the time needed to flesh out the philosophical ideals that are questioned and introduced throughout. (And with a character that's "not into books" a television series wouldn't have to worry about alienating its audience with highfalutin ideals.)

I like your season deconstruction, and couldn't agree more.

I also think it'd be cool if the television show had some interactivity in season 5: let the viewers decide JC's final fate!

reply

Thinking some more about it.

In either a film or a tv series, quite a few things would need to be changed.

For example, it's almost a guarentee if it happened that the Rentons would play a pretty major role in it. Sandra would almost certainly be a love interest to some extent. You can't really have a film or a TV show when it's just one character on his own for stretches that last too long (notice how Jack tends to generally have Audrey or Nina or Tony or Curtis or randombankguy tagging along).

However, the times in 24 when we do have Jack on his own, there's often Chloe in contact with him through his earpiece - So, Jacobson will be good there.

I think the Sarah Connor Chronicles is worth an honourable mention, particularly the way they set out events over a few episodes and general construction of the season.

I love the idea of a series as opposed to a film, but FIVE seasons? Deus Ex is amazing and lenghty, but I still think 5 seasons is stretching it, unless each season has less than 10 episodes.

The reason is that it will be difficult to fill up spaces like season one (working for UNATCO) and keep it interesting. People want interesting plot and the one big change is the finale (Paul going rogue). I think this might be somewhere in the middle, and at the end we get Lebedev's jet. There just needs to be more. I would say 3 seasons? With about 12 episodes each (40min). The point is that the game doesn't have everything you will need to fill them all up, thus keep it just long enough for staying power, yet direct and to-the-point to stay true to the game, with enough interesting plot happenings to keep viewers intersted. Other than that though, it really is a great idea. I always thought Deus Ex would make a great kind of cinematic adaptation.

reply

Dolph Lundgren would be my first choice for Gunther. While he isn't german, and thus hasn't really got the proper accent, I think he got the right looks, and well, to non-swedes and non-germans I guess Dolph's accent could be accepted as "german".

I really like the idea about a tv show i think it would work perfectly.

Sic Parvis Magna 'Greatness from small beginings'

reply

I would rather see a very big budget mini series if a movie did not happen

and also JC is better off without a love interest like really he is a nano augmented clone.

Also fact nicolette has a boyfriend
fact janice is a bitch
fact anna is a bitch
fact maggie is a bitch
fact sandra is a loser
fact tiffany to late in the game
fact he does not have time for a girlfriend when he is saving the world and would degrade the story
fact the kill switch is painful

reply

As someone already put out there: Christian Bale would probably make a good JC Denton. He's good with voices and looks pretty similar.

reply

Kevin Nash the big Russian from Punisher for Gunther. I know he is not the most popular but I think Colin Ferral looks similar to Denton.

reply

Christian Bale as JC / Paul Denton. They're identical, except for JC's sunglasses and slightly growlier voice. (think Batman / Bruce Wayne!)
I think Bale's character in 'Equilibrium' owes more than a passing nod to J.C. Denton.
Isn't Anna Navarre supposed to be Russian? If so, what phuqing good would Helena Bonham-Carter be in the role??
Tracer Tong sounds like Mr. Yin from series 3 of Father Ted!

The biggest problem with a film adaptation is the fact you can play the game several different ways. You can imagine fans watching the movie and going "That's not what I'd have done!".

"My PC smells funny"

reply

While that might be true, the general plotlines in DX remain the same. There may be three different ways of getting an objective accomplished, but ultimately you can't progress unless it's done. So it is linear, somewhat.
What will really stymie any writers is how to end it, whether it's a film, mini series or whatever.

reply

Although the 1st game had 3 endings, the developers picked one to use in the 2nd game. Perhaps we should wait for Deus Ex 3 and see how the whole thing pans out?
THEN they can make a film!

It's too bad she won't live.....but than again who does?

reply

I don't know about all the characters, but the ideal actors for the lead roles seem to be:
Christian Bale as J.C. Denton
Dominic West as Paul Denton
Daniel Day Lewis as Bob Page
Ken Watanabe as Tracer Tong
Jeremy Renner as Jock

reply

Cast aside, who would make a good director? I'd suggest Ridley Scott, or Neill Blomkamp.

reply

WHAT!? No...? Well maybe, but he has not made a serious film since Blade Runner (1984), or maybe Gladiator (2000). How about a serious film maker? Like Darren Aronofsky, or Richard Linklater. If it has to be a Hollywood director. Which is likely.

reply

Or maybe Spike Lee.
