hi, i was wondering if any guys (british, irish, scottish--anything BUT american) like an american accent. i was born and raised in new york, and i always hear friends talking about wanting guys wit british accents, so i want to see if its the same the other way around. hahha thanks :)

reply

HAHA, pretty funny post............but a good point however.
No takers yet I guess.

Would Ally Sheedy be considered New York? I like her accent but this is a tough one as I find it hard to differentiate with American accents. Apart from the very obvious ones.

reply

Yes, she is from New York, but there are different New York accents.
I have an aunt from Brooklyn and it's very different from a regular New York accent, probably Queens is different as well, John Mcenroe is from Queens and his is different from a regular New York accent.
Marissa Tomei is from Brooklyn too, I'm sure she's lost some of it, but it was very pronounced in My Cousin Vinny.

reply

im from long island, and really brooklyn is the only one that is completly different sounding.i live right next to queens but there is so many people from other countries i rarely even hear people who arent indian or asian or spanish or whatnot.

reply

HA! (Sure no one on Long Island has an accent?)
Accents are in the ear of the beholder.

reply

Most boys I've come across find the american accent to be tacky and annoying.

reply

New york accent is cool, has a calm straight to the point tone to it, rest of america sound stupid, annoying and fake

reply

Generally, only southerners, New Englanders, and New Yorkers have pronounced regional accents. Everyone else sounds kind of bland and generic (I'm a southerner but I spend part of my childhood in California so I don't have a southern accent).
I don't know about girls, but guys seem to find southern accents sexy. They really eat up the whole Southern Belle thing (a result of the popularity of Gone With the Wind?)

reply

Ive never heard an accent I didnt like, Im mid british and only have to drive 10 miles to hear things change. Its so cool, wherever you are from, to have an accent, and of course brits/americans always seem to love each others accents

When I travel abroad I often get positive comments on my American accent. I really don’t have a strong dialect though. I have that commercial like telemarketer voice and accent. I could be from anywhere in the US.

reply

hmmm. I'm australian, and personally I couldn't care less about accents. However, I don't mind the American accent.

It's funny, when I travelled to America a few years ago, I was so used to the accent that I thought my own voice sounded weird. Do people like Aussie accents?

reply

Do people like Aussie accents?

I looove the Aussie accent

reply

That's funny that you thought your own accent sounded odd.

And I LOVE Aussie accents. One of my professors back in college was from Sydney and I loved going to his class (and it wasn't because I liked Marketing Management).

Too bad he was significantly older and married...

;-)

reply

I love Aussie accents, too. When I was in college there was a TA for my general physics class who was Australian. I loved going to his help sessions just to listen to him talk. Unfortunately, I still didn't understand physics! :-(

reply

Absolutely love the Aussie accent! ;-)

Yeah, I think a New York accent could sound pretty happening in London Town.

reply

American accent is ok, wouldn't say I find it attractive or anything.

The problem with Americans is they expect us English to all sound like Hugh Grant, which the vast majority of the population don't!

If all American women are like your friends then I'm tempted to move out there! lol

Celtise I adore Irish accents,British, and the rest .Could you be more specific on what type of Irish accent you have?

I an American with what most call a 'general American Accent' or 'California accent' and I hear most people can't stand my accent.

I don't like the american accent much, the only problem is most of the tv shows over here are american, so you just get used to it...

Ha ha. It probably wasn't just the accent but the volume. I am American and have lived in the U.S. most of my life, and it still bothers me how LOUDLY so many people talk. I lived in Britain for about 4 years and got accustomed to pindrop quiet on commuter trains and sane, quiet most other places. Unless they were legless in the pub or at a football match, the volume rarely went up too high. It is utter cacaphony on the NY commuter trains, even before everyone had a cell phone to shout into.
