I think this is a great question, and many seem to have either blanked out the question and any references within the film that support or deny the answer, or have agonised over the gender and forced a decision one way or the other.
This is one of the many things that make this film worthwhile.

As for the gender of the actor? When the corpse is laying out naked and the camera reveals the hips and pelvic region, there is no doubt that the body laying there before the camera was born a female, this is obvious in the extended anterior bone structure of the pelvis, a phenomenon found only in biological females, however, this does not alter the ambiguity of the character in the film, the film is a drama, not an anatomy and physiology lesson.
