favourite character/moment

favourite character - weasel - especially in the early episodes.

favourite storyline has to be either the red vs the blue foxes, or Bold's spin off storyline which i thought was done brilliantly and was quite upsetting for me as a kid!

PS anyone used to get the magazines? I have them all!

reply

I haven't watched these in soooo long.

But, i keep remembering, this moment when a little bird, not a main character, is shown poking dead mice onto the thorns of a bush. I remember asking my mum why he did that.

There was blood and everything.

reply

That was the Shrike in the first series - "BUTCHER BIRD!!" - it swooped on Mr and Mrs Mouses' (or should that be Mices?)new born children. And i remember the blood as well! It was a bit disturbing for wee kids.

Do you remember the bit when the hedgehogs were crushed on the motorway?

reply

wow! how cool! a web board for Animals of fathing wood!

It was the best cartoon ever. I know it was a bit mean to kill off half the characters in nasty ways but it did teach kids about natcher and just showed it how it is!

I mean, hedgehogs get run over all the time! I think the only one I cried at was when bold died-that was very sad..

reply

I think the Bold storyline was my favourite - anyone read the books? Bold's story is a book on its own and its so sad - and you get to see some more of the best characters - like Rollo, Whisper and Shadow

reply

Rollo? The best? Good grief

Captain, although your abilities intrigue me, you are quite honestly inferior- Khan Singh

reply

my favourite was always vixen- as a kid me and my friends all re-enacted this show and i was always her!

reply

Yeah slip of the tongue Rollo was a royal pain, but Whisper and Shadow were alright. I don't think Rollo was in the books, or if he was he wasn't nearly as annoying.

reply

He was in the book, and he was quite an endearing character.

My favourite moments:
- When Vixen told Fox she was pregant
- The early scenes with Ranger as a little cub (attacking Scarface's paws!), and we see the 'problems' at home.
- The fight between Fox and Scarface - it was pretty brutal for kids' TV.

reply

Weasel was always my favourite, and I loved her relationship with Measly (sp?).
My favourite episodes were the Fox and Scarface fight one, and the one where
Scarface is killed.

You're a disgrace to our family name of Wagstaff, if such a thing is possible

reply

I think my favourite character was Kestrel, she just seemed generalyl awesome....but she was just phased out at White Deer Park :( And I thnik my favourite moment was just generally the entire episode when they took shelter in the Church, I remember thinkin it was funny!

reply

My favourite character was either Weasle, Moley or Vixen. But I love all the foxes. :) Still, Moley was just so cute. I remember actually crying when he died. Though I was about five at the time... Oh, and Badger's death made me cry too. Poor Mossy. *sigh* Anyway, I have vivid memories of that scene with the Butcher Bird. Horrible, but really cool how they didn't censor the blood. I think it's better that they told it how it was, closer to how it would be in the wild, rather than say 'don't worry, kiddies, animals don't eat each other, they're too cute!'

My favourite scene is probably the one where Badger dies, just because it's so sad. Oh, and when the other animals are trying to cure Mr Rabbit of his hiccups. It's funny. :)

reply

[deleted]

Kestrel was my fave. I was reading one of the books a while a go and they wanted Heron to go look out and he said his eyes weren't as good as Kestrel's and that it was a shame she wasn't there(or somethin like that). I hadn't read the books prior and I remembered thinkg, what, they killed her?! But they didn't, that's a relief.

reply

My favourite characters were always Charmer and Ranger. They were so adorible, though it annoyed me that their cubs were never in the show. I saw the series first, and then last year I tracked down the books and read them. It really annoyed me that a lot of the cubs weren't in the tv series script... though, I guess it would've made the show a lot more complicated.

I have a lot of favourite scenes. There's one with Mr and Mrs Rabbit that I like to quote to make my mum laugh.
Rabbit: "My mates in there, she's having her babies..." *moans*
Hare: "Wait a minute rabbit, she's having the babies, not you."
Rabbit: "But I'm so sensitive you know, I can feel every last twinge" *faint*

Hehe, I can't help but laugh at that rabbit, he's so classic.

I loved all the scenes when the cubs (Charmer, Dreamer, Friendly and Bold) were little. They were so cute! I loved how Bold was always so outgoing, and Fox and Vixen were amusing as parents.

reply

there were books??

like childrens picture-word books or adult type books??

i loved the fox family, they were just so great. chalmer, Ranger, Bold, Whisper. Bold & Whisper's cub. (i forgot what his name is)Plucky?? or was that the hare he was friends with.

reply

Yes, the TV series was based on a series of books by Colin Dann. There were seven books in total (eight if you count a prequel that was written showing life in Farthing Wood before it was destroyed).

There were three seasons of the TV show. The first was based on the original book, "The Animals of Farthing Wood". The second combined the next three books, "In the Grip of Winter", "Fox's Feud" and "The Fox Cub Bold". The third combined the final two books, "In the Path of the Storm" and "Battle for the Park". The fifth book, "The Siege of White Deer Park", was never adapted for TV, and neither was the prequel.

I'm not sure what kind of age group the books were aimed at - probably for all ages - but they certainly weren't children's picture books. They are very similar in some respects to the TV series, although there are some noticeable differences. In the books, most of the main characters are male, whereas in the TV version, some of them (Adder, Owl, Weasel) were female. Also, some characters that die in the books don't die in the TV series (Toad), while there are some that die in the TV series but not the book (Badger).

reply

I'd swear that badger did die in the books, although I only have the audio tapes to go by as I haven't read those books in about 10 years!

"And now for something completly different." Wait, damn it!
"There is no you, there is only me!"

reply

No, he definitely didn't die in the books. I checked last night and he's still alive at the end of the last one.

reply

can anyone remember when the pheasent (sp?) got shot! i thought that was horrible lol.

my favourite was weasel & kestrel

reply

Yes, poor mr pheasant got his comeuppance when his wife got shot by the farmer.

Wasn't there a bit when the Kestrel mistakes the mice for other mice and eats one of them?

reply

Yes, there was. She was "deeply embarrased" about it.

My favourite character is Vixen - beautiful design, and very kind to the other animal.

I hated Measly (Weasel's mate) and the Rat leader (Bully) with a passion though - Measly was just annoying and Bully's little "Who am I?" routine got old quick.

My favourite part had to be the showdown between Fox and Scarface, while my worst part was the murder of Adder's mate, Sinuous. What a nasty way to go, being strangled by a rat, and Adder's reaction to her mate's death was heartbreaking.

reply

yeah, adder's bitterness was brilliantly done for a children's show! i remember her whispering "they killed sinuous, so i raided their nests" and it was actually quite chilling. i also used to hate bold, but i remember sitting at the table and not being able to eat my dinner after the episode where he died because I was crying so hard. i really dont think any other series had quite the same effect one me. im 18 now and i really do think that the CBBC programmes of my childhood represent a golden age in kids TV. such programmes as Dizzy heights, Uncle Jack, century falls etc which are unparalleled today. also grange hill and byker grove still had balls, and there were crazy oddities like MUD (anyone remember mud???). sheer class all of them, but AOFW is unforgettable.

reply

Moley! Gotta Love the lil guy!

That's one part of this series that really struck me as a child, and I remember it so clearly to this day. Strange. I haven't seen this for more than six years.

reply

Not my favourite moment but the one i remember the most- the animals have to cross a very busy motorway. At the end of the line is the hedgehog couple- an old female and male pair. The rest of the animals walk on fine, but the girl hedgehog is too scared to move. She curls up into a ball. Her husband(the male hedgehog) pleads for her to move on, but hse won't. She stays curled up until a car eventually rans her over and kills her. The male haedgehog cries and the other animals were upset too. This was soo upsetting for me as a child of about 6 or 7 watching it. I cried my eyes out- it was horrible.

I remember that my favuorite character was vixen- she has such a beautiful name and she was so nice and pretty too.
i also liked the weasel.

XRachyX:)

reply

Bold's storyline was my favorite. Gah. Soooooo sad. Even though I'd already read all the books and knew it was going to happen, it was just... heartbreaking.

Favorite characters? Probably Adder, Scarface (he was deliciously evil) and Weasel.

reply

I had the magazines too! Did anyone have the sticker book thing, where you could move all the characters (on like plastic stickers), about on a scene of a field. My that takes me back!

reply

Yes I had that!!! I think I've still got it somewhere aswell, probably in an attic. Roll on the DVD release!!!

reply

Adder is so totally the best

"I BIT HIM!"

me and my brother used to randomly scream that at each other all the time and then go into hysterics. wow memories

It's over now, the Music of the Night!

reply

God I can't believe anyone can remember exact names and episodes...I just remember little snippets of this show. I remember loving it even though it was scary and sad, the fact that it was real and not mollycoddling was brilliant.

As I said, can' remember names etc, but I remember when...I think they were turkeys?....were running away by themselves, and they got seperated, and then the boy turkey saw the girl turkey hung up dead in a human's backyard it was so sad.

And I remember when a girl red fox and a boy blue fox fell in love...awwww...

And when Adder fell in love...and her boyfriend was always counting things and he was like, "What? I'm an Adder!"

And I remember Fox always being the kind of guardian.

Oh what a brill show! It kind of reminds me of Peter Rabbit, scary and real and not censoring things, like even when the farmer ate some of Benjamin's kids.

reply

Favourite moment was finally reaching White Deer Park and Fox saying how he wished everyone had made it, then The Great White Stag's speech

Fave character for me is Badger

The episode where he died was brilliantly done, its a shame the same wasnt done for other characters such as Mole

reply

Adder was the best, I used to watch the show and I still read the books just for Adder. He/she is awesome.

My favourite bit is the road crossing, it was so tense.

reply

its a shame the same wasnt done for other characters such as Mole
I know, it was so damn annoying many of the main characters just died offscreen.

"Nasty French planet, filled with shifty, back-stabbing, croissant-sniffing, nitwits!!!"

reply

My favourite character was probably Adder, she was cool cos u never knew if she'd go good or bad.

The best moment was the river crossing in series 1 where Fox and Badger got hit by the debris, that was genuinely thrilling. Although the hedgehogs getting run over was really sad too.

reply

WEASEL WEASEL WEASEL WEASEL WEASEL! I *beep* love that weasel! If there's ever one to make me laugh its her :D I'm watching 'On To White Deer Park' as i write this. The part in the church! I love it when weasel's singing 'step on a crack....' and so on lmao! I cried about a million times in the 'New Beginnings' one :'( Ahh i'm well gutted i don't have the 2nd feature length video out of the second series :O gutting or what. Omg earlier on i was watching the part where the hedgehogs were run over and i swear i nearly cried again :/

Wow, I have only just discovered this board! It's fab! I loved this programme so much when I was younger!
My favourite moments... anything with Fox and Vixen's cubs (when all four of them were alive, I was really sad when Dreamer died)

When Charmer and hmmm, can't remember his name, you know, the blue fox, Scarface's son...nope, can't remember! Well anyway, when him and Charmer met at the stream and fell in love! It was like Romeo & Juliet!

The foxhunt, and when Adder bit the horse's leg so that Vixen could get away! Adder rocked!

I could keep listing forever, but can I mention one little plotline that I really hated? When Badger went for a walk in the snow and got hurt, and then the Warden took him in. I hated how Badger's personality changed and was nasty to all the other animals because he thought they were stupid for living in the wild, and that they should all live in the house with the Warden. I don't know why, but at the time that really upset me!

I was bored of my signature...

Ranger! That's the one! Thanks!
And as for Badger turning into an old grouch... I blame that cat!

I was bored of my signature...

reply

Favourite moment was whn Fox shut Owl up after revealing Weasel saved Fox from the blue foxes wrath. Owl was a bit pompous, so it was nice to see.
Does anyone know where I can view the 3rd season?

reply

I'm so addicted to this show its unreal. Had to forfeit my videos recently as they've broken from over use but determined to get the dvds as this ruled my life in the 90's!

Ok, -Favourite moment, anything with the foxes in as they are the best characters but in particular the Romeo and Juliet storyline between Ranger and Charmer, it was so lovely when Fox gave him their blessing.
-Saddest moment when Bold dies of course but Badger's death is a close second.
-Most shocking moments when adder kills Scarface or when the Great White Stag dies.
-Most annoying character Weasel or Measley or their kids in the later episodes or anything involving the rats.

If anyone hasn't read the books, do it now! They are brilliant stories and not just kids books.

reply

Adder was the best by far she rocked that show I'd have probaly stopped watching if they'd killed her off. I bought the whole series on DVD bootleg a while back and just got round to watching all 39 episodes, Series 1 & 2 are awesome, 3 is not so good.

They think we're the demons now - Prue Halliwell ~ All Hell Breaks Loose ~ Charmed

reply

I love Weasel, because she's so funny.

Smeg!
