Just finished watching this film, and usually I'm quite the bod at understanding films and everything, but this film has me stumped.
Why did Charlie survive and the rest die? What was the role of the German prisoner? Why were the soliders underground? I grasped the concept of them being dead, but why was Charlie there? What was the ending about?
Some of this is open to interpretation, but I'll give you mine:
Why did Charlie survive and the rest die? He didn't. They all died at the beginning, before the scene with the fog. They were dead for pretty much the whole movie. What was the role of the German prisoner? To test the dead soldiers. Why were the soliders underground? I grasped the concept of them being dead, but why was Charlie there? He was dead too. What was the ending about? Charlie was released from the purgatory/judgement place/whatever it was and allowed to go to heaven/nirvana/whatever, presumably. The soldiers arriving at the end could be the original soldiers being tested a second time, or another group about to undergo the same test.
Although I will give James01/Bridgette99/whatever credit, this film must have traumatised them. They have been posting the same tripe for years now. Sad really.

So as well as being a forum troll you are a lier as above you stated you would stop when you made it clear you don't like this film. You made it perfectly clear that you do infact not like this film yet now say you will never stop trolling, that makes you a lier. Its not name calling to say you are a lieing troll, it is fact.
----------------- Mithaearon - "It can't rain all the time."
If you must know I am 30 how old are you?. Thanks for the spelling lesson, but I think you should concentrate on yours rather than others. A spelling mistake here and there is forgiveable as long as the post is coherent unlike most of the rubbish you post.
----------------- Mithaearon - "It can't rain all the time."
Bridget, PLEASE! I hate Kill Bill as much as you hate this movie, but i didnt let it control my life now did I? Don't worry, I'm sure you're not the only one who hates this movie so, please, stop bashing this B-list movie on the forums and...go outside or something.
James01/Bridget99 you need to get a life mate (prepares for "Deathwatch ruined my life" cut and paste reply) Its been over two years now of posting the same rubbish. Get over it.
----------------- Mithaearon - "It can't rain all the time."
Yes you say "end of story" but it won't be will it? You will still continue to post the same cut and pasted rubbish over and over again. It it is "end of story" please stop.
----------------- Mithaearon - "It can't rain all the time."
I really think you shouldn't criticise other people's English skills when you come out with this obviously incorrect tripe "take some English lesson". I presume you mean either take an English lesson or take some English lessons. I wouldn't normally bother but as you did I thought I'd indulge myself. Oh and, would you please just vacate the Deathwatch board? I think you made it abundantly clear that you despise this film. We don't all need to hear it again and again and again and again...you get my point?
Twelve times did the iron register of time beat on the sonorous bell metal
Being that liking or disliking a film is subjective rather than objective you can not say that someone is wrong for saying so.
Also I didn't think Deathwatch was a long film? It only clocks in at 94 minutes which by todays standards is fairly short.
Again saying it is boring is subjective. A boring film to one person is engaging to another. You mentioned films like Spiderman which you call great. For some they are mindless action films with all special effects and no meaning. Perhaps you should stick to those style of movies if that is what you like and leave films like this alone. Its been a few years now since you have been making your crusade against this film, some would call that sad. Move on. Wactch a film you enjoy and stop haunting this forum.
----------------- Mithaearon - "It's a Forum Troll."
You would rather die than watch it again, yet you are willing to spend endless hours of your life talking about it on this message board? Especially when you find life so short. The film was only an hour and a half but you must have spent hours responding with such 'witty' comments. Next time feel an urge to post just think... I'm another five minutes closer to death.
Same ones, I think. It IS purgatory, and they have to go through this again and again until they learn their lesson. What is their lesson? Peace, mercy, brotherhood...hell, I don't know. Isn't important. Still a fine movie.
Hmmm . . . I had a somewhat different interpretation of the movie.
Why did Charlie survive and the rest die?
As the soldier stated, Charlie was the only one who tried to help him.
What was the role of the German prisoner?
He was evil, hence the tagline 'Deliver them from evil'. In the movie he tests the soldiers; the ones who fail die, and the ones who pass live.
Why were the soliders underground? I grasped the concept of them being dead, but why was Charlie there?
Throughout the movie, the German soldier induced various hallucinations upon the soldiers (i.e. the moving barbed wire). In my mind the underground scene was nothing more than a hallucination meant to lead Charlie out of the trench.
What was the ending about?
As others have said, one of two things (although I believe it is the first):
1) Simply the scene of the soldiers first arriving at the trench, but this time from a perspective where you could clearly see the German soldier, and thus understand that his purpose was to test the soldiers.
OR
2) Another group of soldiers arriving to be tested, just as the first were.
All the guys in this endless, time-wasting battle of wits..thank you all for the grin on my face. It was really funny to read this pathetic discussion...let's talk about movies instead insulting people, you don't know, with insults of childish level.
Just leave Bridget alone. She hates the movie and she's gonna spam every thread on it. Let's just ignore Bridge's posts and keep our discussion going. I posted some theories a while back, and discussing their probability seems like a reasonable place to start.
Hi there. As hilarious as Bridget99's tirades about this film are, I wonder if I might be permitted to bring the conversation back to the original point in question, i.e. the aspects of the movie that have stumped frizzeh. Most of my own thoughts and opinions have already been mirrored by other users during the course of this thread, but I thought you might like to know that the 'Wikipedia' page about this film has some interesting theories of it's own:
(I thought it would be better to put a link to the page rather than just repeating what it said word for word and pretending they were my own thoughts!)
Thank you basil_boomboom_brush for bringing the discussion back. Despite your wishes, I posted the theories up for discussion :]
* Friedrich is an evil entity. While the soldiers were wandering through the fog, Friedrich leads them to the trench. Here he tests them; those who fail are killed, and those who pass survive and are free to leave the trench. The ending scene in the movie could represent either the original soldiers coming to the trench, or a new group. The new perspective, from which we can see Friedrich's face, is meant to show a sense of knowing, suggesting that he planned for the soldiers to arrive so that he could kill the unworthy. * The soldiers died in the raid against the Germans on the Western Front when the enemy gunned them down and the gas was dropped on them. The trench that they come across is a form of purgatory for their sins in their previous lives. The men that escape or are murdered by their own comrades are free to start a new life and the men either killed or attacked by the trench have to repeat the whole process all over again under the eye of Friedrich (Torben Liebrecht), who resembles a type of judge. * The whole film is an allegory of the Bible. Such events suggest this as a scene where one the men is crucified, a biblical tagline, quotes from the Bible itself, a DVD case with the picture of a man wearing a crown of barbed wire, blood on a bible and the cross. * The soldiers are going crazy like the Boche soldiers before them under the influence of the gas the night before. In their insanity they kill each other, hear things that aren't real, see strange things like barbed wire growing out of the ground and see dug-outs that they recently exploded come back to their original formation.
And yet you say every single actor in Deathwatch was crap. How could you like these movies, when one has an actor from Deathwatch in a major role, and the other stars him? Hmmm??????????????

"Since Jamie Bell has lived in America, his English accent has gone."
Wrong. If you listen to Jamie speaking out of role he still has his accent, just as much as ever. Mr. Bell simply learned an American accent . . . much like many Americans learn British accents. Jamie first used his American accent in the film Undertow (2004).
Not necessarily. There are plenty of British people who keep their accents even after living in the States for many years. Besides, you shouldn't like an actor just because of their accent XP
America USED to be the greatest country in the world. Besides, your entire arguement is based around the generalization that British films are always low budget. I'm sorry, but you fail.
Ha, and you say you're British. I'm American, and I don't agree with that bullsh it. 80% of the British films I've seen are good, while about 5% of the American films are. Granted, part of that is probably partly due to the better films making it over the pond, but nonetheless, you have to admit the US churns out a lot of crap, while the Brits are disproportionately talented. ---------- If you hate memes, copy this and add it to your signature.
I really like how you can't come up with anything better than "shut up", it clearly shows that you have run out of anything even remotely intelligent to say. Entertaining, really. You say you like the Spiderman movies? That shows what kind of person you are. You can't figure out the deeper meanings of any movie without having it thrown in your face.
1) Jamie Bell has NOT LOST HIS BRITISH ACCENT. Have you heard any of his recent interviews? His accent is as British as ever.
2) Um . . . how is that? They could easily do a Deathwatch sequel. Believe it or not, the word 'sequel' doesn't mean that the film has the same actors. A Deathwatch sequel could be made using the idea of the original (i.e. a haunted warzone with tormented troupes), with new cast and setting. Besides, even if Jamie had lost his natural accent, he could easily replicate a British accent. You fail . . . again.
I never said they should or would make a Deathwatch sequel. All I was doing was pointing out the idiocy in your statement claiming that they couldn't make another Deathwatch.
It has become clear that you are a complete idiot. Do I have a problem with you hating the movie? No. You are entitled to your opinion. The problem comes when spam the boards, and make false statements about movies and actors you obviously know nothing about. Please leave. I know I'm not alone in saying that I look forward to the inevitable day that you will be banned.
With the way you're acting, the ban-mobile isn't very far away...as a matter of fact, I think I can hear the sirens right now... RUN BRIDGET, RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!
Anyway: Shut up, grow up and get a life...at least a better one than the one you're wasting on this board.
The movie was also designed to make the most feeble minded viewer who watched it go stark raving bonkers and make her or him post compulsively on this forum. Eventually the poor creature will die of exhaustion. In the afterlife she/he/it will be forced to watch this intriguing movie in an endless loop without the comfort of copying nor pasting. Truly, a remarkable movie.
Yep, and I watched it because Andy Serkis is in it. (I bought the DVD because it turned out to be one of the best horror flicks I'd seen in a long while.)
Here's an idea, why not tell us WHY you think it "blows chunks", hunny? So far it seems you were watching it only for eye candy. If you just say "it sucked" without giving any explanation, than you are nothing but a troll.
Ok heres a little experiment people Im going to swear as much as possible in this post so as to get it deleted
Ok Mods if you delete this do you wana maybe deal with Bridget99 as well please. Shes a troll and is ruining these boards if you look at nearly every thread for this film she will have said her usual tripe over them again and again. I have written a letter to you once already about this, I have also reported Bridget99 more times than I care to think, yet you have done nothing, yet you will undoubtly remove this post.
So on with the swearing: Bridget99 you *beep* little bitch why don't you just *beep* off back to that little *beep* hovel you call a home and suck your dads *beep* what ever organ he has, you have got to be one of the most immature little *beep* I have ever come across I hope you get hit by a car and *beep* die you deserve to for the sort of *beep* *beep* you put across these boards on a daily *beep* basis. You may have wasted two hours of you *beep* life watching the movie but you have wasted at least a *beep* month of your useless life on these boards bitching and moaning about it you ass *beep* little bitch. Get the *beep* over it. *beep* cock sucking bitch.
Also lets try some other rule breaking go here to get your FREE yes FREE Ipod
Umm... The rating doesn't say it all. This is a low-budget production, and as such it excels. We don't have to have some A-list actors in a flick and fill it with explosions and CG-effects to make it rate high, although some ppl seem to go for just that. It's a matter of taste really. I liked it, but then I'm a sucker for psychological horror movies, where something quite common turns very very nasty, not necessarily with lots of splatters and gore. I like Romero's Living Dead-movie as well, but that's another track. 8-)
i think u need to go take care of ur cooch instead of spending ur life(oh wait u dont have one)on some stupid topic which u cant even explain anything right and just keep repeating urself over and over again! ur a betch with ur VG on ur neck and it bleeds cuz u scratch it like a pimple on ur face!
I said I watched it because Andy Serkis was in it. I did NOT say it was a good movie because he had plenty of screen time; I praised it for the suspense, the mystery, etc. For that matter, I watched "The Prestige", "Blessed" and "Shiner" for the same reason, and thought they were, respectively, very good, terrible, and just ok. I didn't go to the "Blessed" board and say it was awful because Andy Serkis didn't have enough screen time, but rather because it was badly written and directed, the star couldn't act, and it changed everything that was brilliant in "Rosemary's Baby". In short, I gave actual reasons, recognising that the amount of my favorite actor's screen time doesn't make or break a movie.
Bridget99 is only a crappy hater, and not worth caring about! If you want to read a good post then stay well clear of Bridget99. You will be highly disappointed!
Hmmm... I see now that you're not merely a hypocrite but an imbecile as well.. Right, first off, I never claimed that Hans Matheson's early demise or limited screen time was the ONLY factor that destroyed the movie for me. I'm sorry, you're right, you didn't. What you said was: If it weren't for Hans Matheson, I wouldn't even watch it. It's really that bad. The worst part is that Jack Hawkstone gets killed not even half-way through the film! WTF?!? Why would you kill off the hottest member of the cast so soon? Couldn't they have taken someone else, like that horse-faced Laurence Fox? Or Billy Elliot? What gives?!? So actually, your specific complaint was that there was too little screen time for Jack Hawkstone, rather than Hans Matheson. As for the rest of your criticisms, the little fact that you didn't even mention them would prevent those "imbeciles" who lack mind-reading ability from taking them into consideration. If you really like the movie so much, you'd likely spend more of your time watching it and less of it raving about the movie on the boards as if it were a bloody life-and-death situation. It seems to me that I'm not the one who's getting unduly upset here.
Your responses get more and more orginal everyday oh wait no they don't.
Go back to the Disney boards, probably the reason you don't get deathwatch is becuase you spend so much time watching cartoons, and by looking at some of the posts you write on there you don't even have enough brain power to understand them
And yet all you seem to do is ask questions on the Disney boards, they are kids movies and you can't understand them
"What happened to both Lampwick and Alexander's parents when neither of them returned home?
Do think they were heartbroken like Geppetto was when he thought Pinocchio had run away?
What about all the other boys parents on Pleasure Island? How did they react when their sons didn't return home?
We also hear that Lampwick had a Grandmother. Was she heartbroken and lonely when her grandson didn't return home?
Wasn't it impossible for the Coachman to be kidnapping boys every night? There would have been no boys left in Italy."
"So if Lampwick is a baddie, how was this his comupprance? "
So your comparing a guy who made movies for kids to a guy who made supernatural horror. yes that makes sense because those genres are so so similar infact im amazed that anybody can tell them apart at all
Oh and could you please name some of these people that consider Deathwatch to be the worst film of 2002 or are you as usual talking out your stupid troll ass?
What I see is somebody who has no idea on how the world works. Do you think that every film script that gets made into a film is shown to every actor in the world?
What you are trying to say is that every 'star' is a good actor, which is of course complete *beep*
Also if Jamie Bell was a bad actor how did he get the lead in Billy Elliot only 2 years before and a part in King Kong?.
Not every movie is made is meant to be a commeriacial success nor is it ment for widespread release, examples: Shaun Of The Dead, Dog Soldiers, Equilibruim.
I suggest you go back to watching films with 'stars' in them if you love big names so much. Try Mr & Mrs Smith, that should be right up your street, Big names, no plot, bad acting. Just what a retard like you would enjoy
Besides we weren't talking about the sound etc we were talking about the 'lack of talent' in the movie. You fail to understand it is impossible for every actor to see every script that is ever produced. You don't need to know anything about the film industry to figure that one out, its common sense. But you've already proven that you havn't got any of that.
If your going to critise it then at least think through your points before you make idiot. Oh thats right you can't because your a troll.
Are you aware that nobody gives a *beep* about your opinion anymore?
Are you aware that you know nothing about movies?
Are you aware who Andy Serkis is?
Are you aware he was in Lord of the Rings and King Kong?
Are you aware Billy Eliot was in King Kong?
Are you aware that you said that these were two of your favorite movies?
Are you aware of that fact that you said you hated these actor's British accent, yet I doubt that any american would ever say, "They can't bloody act"?
Did you know you don't need famous actors to make a good movie?
Did you know that there are many people on these forums who actually like this movie?
Are you aware that you're wasting your life?
Are you aware that you are pathetic?
Are you aware that you spent two hours watching this movie which you say you will never get back, yet you waste countless hours bitching about it like a little girl?

You complain about wasting your life watching Deathwatch, but I wonder how many countless hours you've wasted flaming *beep* morons. If you would rather die than watch this movie, than please, die already. I'm sure the world, or at least IMDB would be much better off.
We all get that you don't like the film internet troll we got the message about this time last year so you can shut up.
And please tell us how you are smarter than the rest of us. And before you say something along the lines of "I'm smarter because I see the truth about Deathwatch and that it's the worst movie fo 2002". That is your opinion and nothing more.
So you would watch it twice to get a laugh but not a third?
What? only one person can be a screwed up individual at a time? even if thats the case you win hands down. MJB hasn't spent 3 years of his life saying the same thing over and over again about a movie he claims he hates but has watch it more than once by choice. You however have.
You are simply stating your opinion you saying that Deathwatch is crap does not make it so.
If you can answer the question then please do. What have I done to be considered a screwed up individual apart from disagree with you over Deathwatch?
We have already been through the famous actor thing several times and have provided answers which prove that statement being false. Come up with a new argument
Ok lets go back to the begining I want you to prove two things.
That am I a screwed up individual. You said that I was, I want you to justify that statement. Justifcation other than the fact that I disagree with you over Deathwatch. I justified my calling you it by pointing out that your way of showing your displeasure at the movie was infantile and bizare to say the least.
And that you do know what you are talking about in saying that Deathwatch is a bad movie other than everybody elses perception of you at the moment i.e. that you have no idea what you are talking about and are little more than a silly little kid who has no idea about film in the slightest.
Now please prove those points. Please try and prove your more than a internet troll
News Flash! Bridget99 known groupie of the cast of Deathwatch has been Hospitalized! 10 Pounds of sp*rm pumped from stomach! Recovering she/he says she can't wait for the next Bassett movie to come out!
I always assumed you hated Mrs. D0ubtf1re because of your "doesn't make sense" posts. My bad! I guess you like it even though it doesn't make sense... that's OK.
I think the montage set to "Dude Looks Like A Lady" was really the last straw for me. The movie is just hard to look at and listen to. I have posted a more detailed commentary on the Mrs. D0utfir3 board... I think it's in a thread that made some kind of comparison with Big Momma's House.
And yeah, it had stars in it, but I don't want to see something that potentially could have been good or looks good on paper... I want to see something that's enjoyable, creative, etc.
But Deathwatch sounds pretty lame, too, and I still don't appreciate the way people have tried to shut you up.
"None of the actors were well-known in America (The Greatest coutry in the world)!
That means that they weren't stars!"
Andy Serkis is real well known 'round these here parts; a dubious honor, but there ya go.
"Greatest country in the world" - yeah, if you like fundamentalist *beep* and blind patriotism with a side of ignorance, and you wash it all down with a swig of xenophobia. Get me out of this godforsaken hell hole!
Hey soccersx... I actually find the administrators on this site to be pretty heavy-handed. If you look at the proportion of posts that get deleted by the administrator, I bet it's just as high as any other similar site.
My experience is that IMDB is tolerant of obscenity and bigotry as long as it's not directed at a Hollywood cash cow. Take a look at the thread related to taking God's name in vain on the "Mrs. Doubtfire" board... there's some pretty offensive stuff there, but none of it criticizes the film, so apparently it's not veboten.
Bridget99 confines her criticism mostly to obscure films like Death Watch, which allows her to fly under the radar. She is very respectful of Disney, "Mrs. Doubtfire," and the like. And I'm not being completely critical in saying that... my affection for Bridget99 is obvious from my posts. I'm just relating the pecularities of IMDB.
Just watched the movie tonight and wanted to check out what people on the boards thought, and my God, have I been entertained. The alternation between "intelligent comment" and "this post has been deleted by an administrator" for 9 pages straight has been... priceless. Thank you all.
"Why were the soliders underground? I grasped the concept of them being dead, but why was Charlie there?"
The way I see this scene is that all those soldiers are damned/in hell, and Charlie sees himself there as a vision to encourage him to escape his squadmate's fate.
im just watching it now on film 4, and i have to say im liking it. i was a little confused at the beginning, but coming to the boards has helped... though i had to trawl through 20+ pages. i also wondered why the soldiers were underground. agree with f rooster manic though, and others who are actually answering the original question.
Watched it on Film 4 too, and was glad for the previous posts explaining the idea of the purgatory test. Similiar to the idea Silent Hill used later, that the characters were already dead, didn't realise it, and were going through the films events unaware.
The thing that annoyed me about this film was that it seemed to constantly break its own rules.
Much was made of the fact that the place was making them kill each other yet several were killed by barbed wire/dead soldiers (I realise they were dead themselves but you get the drift).
Also, if this was a test to see who goes to heaven/hell why did Chivas go to hell? He was paralysed from the neck down for the entire picture and couldn't do anything yet his reward was to be eaten alive by rats and then go to hell? Doesn't seem very fair.
I actually think that all of them were constantly tested ALL the time, by that I mean, as soon as one person (in this case Jamie Bell/Shakespeare) does RIGHT and is rewarded by going to heaven OR getting their life back, the timeline is repeated and a different character is tested.
This would mark-out the "evil" individuals and the "good" individuals eventually, thereby giving everyone a chance to reclaim their lives OR passage to heaven.
