Longest 141 Minutes of Your Life

Starts off with a bunch of old farts playing golf and ends with a bunch of old farts playing golf. And in-between is the dullest, most tedious movie I do believe has ever been made. I don't care if John Sayles DID do it (and I'm generally a fan), this movie is LONG and BORING.

Wow I didn't realize the movie was that long when I watched it, but I don't think it's dull.
I enjoyed the movie alot, although I have to admit that it's not the kind of movie I would see several times a month.
What I really enjoyed was that the movie was basically set up in a way that we, as the viewers, are allowed to watch a snapshot of the lives of the people in this movie.
The movie enters in a certain point of interest and then leaves again the same way.
This movie is a total character piece, and is all about their actions and relationships.
Sure, it's not Star Wars, but sometimes it's refreshing to watch a movie that makes you feel like you are actually watching real people living real lives.

I really enjoyed it as well, it was a refreshing slice of life. I work at a local TV station and we broadcast those board of supervisor meetings where local residents clamor about the local land developments. I can see it having a smaller window of popularity, but I thought it was very very good. Funny thing, I just recommended it to a co-worker tonight and she's going to take it home. I'll be interested to hear her reaction.

I could not agree more with this assessment. Ugghhh...brutally tiresome. I wanted to like this film, as I am a Sayles fan. But this was intolerable...and almost pointless.

I understand how someone could see this movie as being boring, but I think it has some to do with the fact that the movie isnt a universal film. I enjoyed the film mainly because I've lived in Jacksonville for about 5 years now, and before then I lived on the Gulf Coast where developers reign freely. I was able to see some familiar characteristics of people I know in the characters in the film, so I think that made the movie even more enjoyable. Basically, I personally dont think that someone who's lived in say, New York or Wisconsin all their life would be able to enjoy this film as much as someone who's lived in or near the region portrayed in the movie. I'm not saying it COULDN'T happen, but ya know....

I agree. Didn't nothin' blowed up never, ain't no shootin' or hollerin', and just when you think you about to see some t1ttie, she up an' putted her shirt on. weren't nothin' but interestin' characters, interestin' stories, and some fine actin'. Who wanna go and see that when "national treasure" gots shiny lights and things gettin' blowed up good? YEEEEEEE-HAAAAAAA!

I fell alseep the 2 times I have seen it. I watched it in the movie theater at 12:00 at night the first time because I wanted to see my town's name at the end and all it said was the state of Florida of some crap. It sucked.

reply

It takes more than being from FL, (I've lived most of my life there), or being familiar with over-development, city council meetings, and land preservationists, (which I am as well). This movie is BORING. I think that the1sthobbster (from the Sunshine State. thread) put it best:

ZZZZZ.

I recorded it, was watching it the first time and muted it and talked on the phone. Decided to try watching it again. It was DULL!

And not because there was no shootin' or cussin' or blowin' up or nudity. It had no plot, it was meaningless, the characters were cookie-cutter, the events were clichéd.

Did John Sayles have a say in ANY of the casting of minor characters?!?!?!

Here's the roster breakdown:
Angela Bassett, Edie Falco, James McDaniel, Bill Cobb, Tom Wright, Ralph Waite,
Timothy Hutton, Mary Steenburgen, Miguel Ferrar, Alan King - ACTORS

Everyone else in the cast: BAD COMMUNITY DINNER THEATRE PLAYERS

Every single time one of these people had to deliver dialogue it was nothing
short of brutal.

Believe it or not, I actually thought the same thing when the black woman with the cropped white hair stood at the railing. As it was, she appeared no more in the movie, so why see her at all? But I thought she just had the deadest delivery there.

And for the record, Tony-award winner Mary Alice played Basett's mother. And completely wasted Jane Alexander is a four time Oscar nominee.

Steenburgen and Alexander were the two biggest wastes in this film. Nothing worse than an actress portraying an acting instructor.

Impossible. It has to at least be second, unless you've never seem Meet Joe Black.

Slightly interesting movie but not to uber exciting. I kind of can't belive I watched the whole thing. I can't relate to ANYTHING in the movie but i got through it and didn't totally hate it. 3 out of 5 on my ratings scale but not neccesarily something I'd reccomend to people either.

Long, boring, and very corny. Predictable soap-opera developments, and corny soliloquys. Ugh.
