guys i noticed a massive plot hole

The aliens were hurt by water right? Well earth is like 70% water.
HUGE PLOTHOLE!!!
I reckon the aliens erected a memorial about the massacre at niagra falls lmao!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pat on the back. You are the very first human to notice this plot hole and you're clearly thrilled by thinking that you are the only one.

Congratulations.

No, you just aren't very smart.

eh...Dude..you need to put that Bong down! It's 2014! LOL

Not only that, I mean, water is one of the most common substances in THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE.

reply

hydrogen is, water is not.

hold up..... There were aliens in this movie!!?!!!!!

Let's remember when they were trapped in the basement, the guy on the radio said the aliens did not come for the planet but that they came for "us".
Whatever the reason they wanted humans for (food, slavery, experiments),
they were not going to let a watery planet stop them. Just stay away from the water as much as possible and grab as many humans as they could.

None of this adequately closes the plot hole and here's why. There is water in our air. If water burned them like sulfuric acid then every breathe would have been scorching their lungs. Their eye's would have been burned. Within minutes of stepping onto our planet without a protective suit they would have been blind and hacking up chunks of seething smoking lung.

Not to mention the dew on the ground and in the cornfields they were running around on and in at night. Their feet would have melted just from walking across the grass at night and they would have gotten what was to them an acid like substance all over themselves in the cornfields.

Then there is the problem of them capturing us for food. The human body is 70% water. Good luck eating that Sign's aliens. Guess they like their meals with a side order of, OH SWEET MOTHER OF GOD MY MOUTH, THROAT, AND GUTS ARE ON FIRE!!!. LOL!

And finally to compound the stupid in this movie. We have aliens that have invented space ships capable of interstellar travel which they use to invade other worlds and yet they have no weapons. All that technology and yet their invaders don't even have a pry bar or a battering ram to defeat a door.

"Look honey it's the Signs aliens coming back, should I be concerned?" "Heck no dear, just lock the door and I'll cut the sprinklers on."

I'm not sure why I've had to do this over and over and over again on this board. Why are you assuming that H2O is what harms the aliens? Do you truly not realize that the chemical composition of aquifer-drawn water (ground water) is very different than "water" from condensation? Water is not H2O. What we refer to as water in daily human nomenclature covers a very broad range of chemical compositions. The H2O-based solution that condensates or that falls from the sky is quite different than the heavily mineral-enriched composition in the ground, which is what the movie tells us harms the aliens. They clearly run through fog and breathe our air without being harmed. Why do you choose to form a conclusion that directly contradicts what the film shows us?

On the technology factor, that's a different story. If you choose not to like the fact that the aliens somehow got to our planet, hover in the air in lights that hang in the sky, and yet have absolutely no technology to speak of, you're well within reason to do so. The answer to that is that the film is based on modern UFO mythology, which entails some of those same nutty principles like crop circles for navigation, naked aliens running around without technology or with a wand, etc. Pretty much chalking it up to magic and defying the laws of physics.

Another factor is that the intent of the film was to draw upon 50's B-movie tropes, where despite there arriving in a spaceship aliens were almost always monster-like and bestial in nature. Despite those foundations I can see why some wouldn't like the lack of technology or seeming incongruity between beings travelling for thousands of light years but not taking technology with them, although in my view it's quite plausible to chalk it up to cultural bias, societal conditioning, lack of resources after adrift for many generations in space, etc. It's not an actual plot hole, but I can see why some wouldn't like it.

But the water itself is not a plot hole, and is not a legitimate complaint. The movie clearly portrays that ground water (which was drawn via faucet) is what harmed them, and that to be safe they avoided lakes (because ground water feeds into them and to varying degrees they'd possess similar chemical properties, making it alkaline to some extent as opposed to acidic). You're confusing "water" as something that's identical in its composition in all possible forms on Earth, and you're incorrect in that assumption. Regardless of what the specifics might be, the movie clearly shows liquid Earth ground water harming the aliens but no other type of moisture.

I'm something new entirely. With my own set of rules. I'm Dexter. Boo.

reply

Yes! Also Bo’s character says early on that the water is “contaminated” a sign as to what would happen later.

Trolls Need Not Apply

Hahaha, good one... Maybe he thought by the title to this film was about some lost highway travelers?

It is explicitly explained in the movie that they came not for our resources, but to harvest humans. Not a plot hole.
