To what extent is this based on truth?

Being from an island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea I haven't heard about the true story of Orr. I've just watched the film and am very interested to know to what extent this story is faithful to the actual facts. I am confused to read some viewers' comments that there was a mixture of the true story and a fictional story at the same time! Which parts were true and which weren't?
By the way... the guy with the long red hair and goatee was Liotta with make-up...

Well I suppose that was liotta, as a matter of fact the long red hair guy and Liotta (Orr) hand the same ring in the same hand and finger.
The history is very very interesting if we see the facts that this really happened but the plot makes you think that the Piro man is going to be another firefighter..
I liked the movie, was kinda short but entertaining.

If you're interested in the real history, you can check out the book called "Fire Lover" by Joseph Wambaugh. It lays out all the evidence allowing you to make your own decisions for the most part.

You can also read John Orr's own book called "Points of Origin: Playing with Fire."

wow it's nearly 9 year later but I agree here - great book and an absolute tick-tock of the investigation.

Film stayed very close to real events.
