Strikingly. Watch Philip Seymour Hoffman destroy himself, except he's not huffing gas anymore. Now he is gambling his life away.

Both movies had similar themes, and were shot using a similar tone, overall.

I enjoyed Love Liza a bit more. It had an intensity that was lacking in Owning Mahowny.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is AWESOME at portraying the dynamics of self-destructive, addicted, underconfident types. He did the same thing in his role in Happiness and somewhat similarly in Boogie Nights. He's a great actor in general, but really captures something in these kind of roles that few actors do.

"Boy that was really exciting. I bet you're a big Lee Marvin fan aren't ya."

And now we know why.

I like Love Liza, but I think this film is far superior. Hoffman is SO interesting in this film. The close - ups on his face and eyes, as he's gambling. PSH was just SUCH a brilliant actor. I can not accept that he's gone.
