Bernie getting fired the second time

"This time you're really fired."
Why?

Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

reply

Probably because he encouraged Mahowny to stop playing after he was up.

reply

Because when Mahowny was up over $9 million, Bernie begged him to quit while he "had them by the balls". He was doing the exact opposite of what they hired him for.

"Boy that was really exciting. I bet you're a big Lee Marvin fan aren't ya."

reply

I don't think it has anything to do with Bernie trying to influence mahowny. Foss knows that no one can influence such a degenerate gambler. Instead I believe it is Foss's way of saying we broke him, or he wont be back so we don't need Bernie anymore. This is juctaposed by mahowny stressing to Foss "see you again soon" when they both no damn well Mahowny is donzo.

reply

I don't know...he had gone broke many times before, but still came back. I don't think there was any reason for him to believe that. He wouldn't have been so solicitous to Mahowny had he thought so, either. I think it was what someone said upthread, that Bernie tried to get him to walk away with the casino's money.

I so agreed with your post.In his boss's mind Bernie was only there to cater to mahowny, to keep Mahowny coming back. The first time Bernie was fired was because Bernie's boss thought that Bernie stopped Mahowny from gambling.Bernie had nothing to do with Mahowny's gambling or not gambling.Bernie was just some kitchen worker who happened to be in the stairwell, when Mahowny lost, and then started playing again.

reply

Because Foss was an a**hole and people like Bernie who have a conscience and a heart...are not good for casino business.

reply

Because he was on Mahowny's side and told him to stop when he still had the 9 million.
