For those who haven't seen it

No violence.
Fast-paced.
Not one boring scene, ever.
Although they show women's breasts for 5 seconds (and in good taste,) there is no typical stupid sex scene.
And most of all: Hoffman steals the show. His character, the way he moves, the way his mind is so warped and focused on gambling, etc...
What pisses me off, however, is that I know only Hoffman fans will watch this movie. I wish others, who haven't seem him in many movies, could watch it so they could see what a genuine actor he truly is.
A film well done.
Watch it! :)

Thanks so much for your great review! I have this movie on my DVR but was a bit hesitant to watch it. I am going to check it out tonight, thanks!

i agree with everything you said

the writing is so smooth and well paced, invisible. it just clicks right along

this one should be shown to screenwriting students to study the way scenes are structured, started in the middle and ended fast....

it's just very well done, all the way around

my only slight slight criticism is maybe they coulda shown his 'light bulb moment' a bit more clearly. just now rewatching it for the third time i was trying to figure the exact moment when he realised he wasn't gonna be able to fix those accounts at the bank. from then on he was just riding the wave as long as he could get away with it, it seems. but there had to be a single moment where this hit him clearly

i do think the film did a good job of showing PSHoffman's introspection.

another textbook strength of the writing in this is that it escalates and escalates very steadily. the intensity rises and rises with each scene. brilliant.

it really is textbook writing.

i would love to see the screenplay to see how close the movie is to it.

another thing i notice is each scene turns, giving an 'up and down, up and down' vibe to the movie.

Absolutely. It's a great film that is made great by Hoffman's BRAVURA performance. He should have won the Oscar for it. I can not believe he wasn't even nominated for it.

I'm not a Hoffman fan but I still watched the movie. It's good.

However, I'm puzzled with your statement that it was "fast-paced". It's not a fast-paced movie.

The movie was horrible. Dragged on needlessly because of weak story points. The writing, directing and production value were mundane and unspectacular
