Sands and the Priest?

Is that the same character, or just a spontaneous cameo by Johnny Depp?
I remember that the priest had left already when agent Sands calls Mariachi in the church...

And I do know the backstory about Depp having so much fun on the set and didnt want to leave after he finished his shooting days, and was allowed to do a Brando-accent in this confession scene.
