The fact that everyone talks only about the sex scene

Is proof that the scene was a mistake. Everything else the movie offered got thrown to the curb and ignored; the whole movie became defined by that one infamous scene

reply

Absolutely.

I just re-watched it and it actually felt out of place, unnecessary and lasted way too long.

reply

For that sequence it was only the director and the two actors in the room.

reply

No it isn't. It's just evidence that some (many) people are still puritan when it comes to sex. It's a very good movie, certainly Halle's best acting performance, and the scene was hot. Mistake? Hell you say!

reply

🤦‍♂️

I know what this is code for.

White *and* Black *supermacists* and separatists have a problem with a beautiful Black woman sleeping with a white man.

Fucking *RACISTS*.

reply

It’s usually the other way round! White women and black guys. All the black women I know would never date a white man. However all the black guys I know are lusting for white ass. It’s all they ever talk about. Monsters Ball is a bit unrealistic in that regards with a white man and black woman.

This is Halle Berry we're talking about here.

I don't know any straight man, of any colour, who'd refuse the opportunity to spend a night with her. Of course, in this film, she's a low-class waitress rather than a glamorous beauty queen/actress, but Billy Bob Thornton is a homely-looking prison warden living with his racist father, so he's hardly a great catch here, and so, on balance, their relationship makes sense (on balance she's still more desirable than him here, as hard-up/down-and-out as her character is, but her character also has low self-esteem and needs the company of a guy who will show her some sort of respect/regard, even if it's based on sex).
